The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade #review #Halloween #YA #ghost #bookseries

About the book:

Alona Dare–Senior in high school, co-captain of the cheerleading squad, Homecoming Queen three years in a row, voted most likely to marry a movie star… and newly dead.

Will Killian–Senior in high school, outcast, dubbed “Will Kill” by the popular crowd for the unearthly aura around him, voted most likely to rob a bank…and a ghost-talker.

My review:
High school is great when you are popular and not so great when you aren't. This book pits the two people, one from each group together via one tragedy, an accidental death. The unlikely duo meet when Alona dies and Will hears and see her spirit. Each of them learn about each other and work together to help other dead while battling their own demons.

Although this is a YA book and a bit campy at times, I did enjoy reading the juxtapose between the two characters. Each chapter was from the view point of one or the other and that made it more interesting or it could have really drug on.

I thought the characters were pretty well developed but as one might expect, there was a romantic interlude. I thought it could have been left out and just maybe hinted at the budding romance. There was also a hint of two minor character's lesbian relationship. It was so minor you could almost call it a blip and seemed meh to the rest of the story line.

I loved the ghosts and their personalities in the story and I can say though the few twist there were, I was taken a bit by surprise and that worked out well for the book.

The cover is very cool! Overall, a decent read and I think younger teens would enjoy.

I give this book 4 pumpkins.

Olivia and the Haunted Hotel by Jodie Shepherd #Review #ghost #Imagination #pigs #Halloween #Childrensfiction

About the book:

On a dark and rainy afternoon after school, Olivia and her friends decide to play "hotel". Olivia's brother, Ian, keeps insisting that the hotel is haunted. Everyone else thinks he's joking, but when things take a spooky turn, and strange noises can be heard all around, Olivia and her friends start to wonder whether a mysterious ghost really is haunting Hotel Olivia!

My review:

This book is based off of a TV series of Olivia. Kids get a chance to have a little, and I do mane little,  Halloween spookiness when Olivia, the main character, decides to have her own hotel. She does everything that a hotel owner would do except one very important thing, play with her brother. But her hotel is not haunted...or is it?

Although a simple book in illustrations, this book is a great emergent reader book with complex sentences. I loved reading how Olivia had a room especially designed for each of her guests. Even though her guests thought it was haunted, she made them feel okay about wanting to stay there. What are friends for after all?

I will say if you are looking for a "spooky or Halloween" book, this is not it. Younger kids will like it as it does have a "ghost" but older children will probably think it corny. In any case, still, a cute book.

I give it 3 Halloween pumpkins.

Disclosure: I obtained a copy of this book for my own collections out of a Little Free Library. The review here is 100% my own opinions and may differ from yours. ~Michelle, Reading Authors Network

Violet Yorke, Gilded Girl: Ghosts In the Closet by PJ McIlVaine #giveaway #spotlight #Middlegrade #ghost #Halloween

Genre: Middle Grade Historical Paranormal Mystery

She sees ghosts...but are they malevolent or friendly?

Poor little rich girl Violet Yorke has seen ghosts for as long as she can remember, but no one believes her.

Not stodgy Grandmother, who took charge of the heiress after her parents were killed in a failed robbery. Nor kind-hearted Aunt Nanette, or Uncle Bertie, a charming rogue. Not even the patient Hugo Hewitt, Violet’s godfather and trustee of her vast fortune.

Everyone dismissed the child’s insistence about ghosts as a harmless eccentricity—until the night her bedroom caught fire. Violet was promptly sent overseas, fueling her anger and resentment.

Two years later, a rebellious twelve-year-old Violet is on her way back to Manhattan on the doomed Titanic. As the ship sinks into the deep Atlantic Ocean, she’s put in a lifeboat by an apparition who rescued her from the clutches of a jewel thief. Presumed lost at sea, Violet shocks everyone by crashing her own funeral.

Following Violet’s recovery, Grandmother has grand high society designs for the girl, but Violet has other ideas. She’s determined to uncover the secret of what really happened to her parents. Then there’s the mystery of the moon-faced boy at gloomy Dunham Hall and his connection to the ghost on Titanic. Also hot on Violet’s trail is the jewel thief, the specter of her murdered governess, and a vengeful ghost lurking in Violet’s childhood home.

Being a poor little rich girl in 1912 Gotham isn’t all it’s cracked up to be in this delightfully dark and droll supernatural historical fantasy.

Excerpt - Intro:

Spooky stories and terrifying tales lurk in dark rural corners and on historic main streets throughout Genesee and Lapeer counties. Hospitals, cemeteries, and historic homes have numerous ghosts attached to them.

The secrets of the dead can be buried in history, but we like to dig into the archives and coax the stories back to life, if only for a fleeting moment with words on the page.

Several chapters in this book feature locations where history, true crime, and the paranormal intersect. These sinister tales of murder have led to locations full of paranormal activity. A Clio man’s spirit is thought to still reside in the junkyard office where he was murdered. The incident was billed as the internet’s first murder case and made nationwide headlines as the Instant Message Murder.

For almost two centuries the Flushing area has been fascinated by tales of the wealthy Brent family whose land is connected to numerous tales of murder, mystery, and ghosts. The land may also have ties to the brutal 1928 murder of 5 year old Dorothy Schneider.

The Lapeer State Home has ties to unethical medical practices, eugenics, and murder. The land and remaining buildings that once belonged to the home are considered to be extremely haunted.

We dive into the history and uncover the dark truths that have lead to such haunting tales. We hope you enjoy this tour of Genesee and Lapeer counties’ most haunted locations.

Food blogging is turning Hope Early into a household name. But the dead body down the block makes her a #1 suspect . . .

So she’s shocked when a neighbor petitions to run Hope right out of her small Connecticut town! Set in her ways, apparently Birdie Donovan doesn’t like the chaos Hope’s sleuthing creates, the police activity and crime scenes, and it’s happening way too often lately.

Eager to make amends, Hope bakes Birdie a batch of her best muffins. The delicious treats might have smoothed things over—until Hope discovers Birdie dead in her gazebo the very next day . . . Now instead of worrying about holding on to her beloved home, Hope is trying to stay out of jail. Because suddenly she’s the lead suspect in the case. Not even her boyfriend, Police Chief Ethan Cahill, is promising he can clear her name, much less discuss the investigation with her. It’s up to Hope to get to bake new ground on the case before the lifestyle brand she’s created—and her whole life—crumbles . . .

Who can you trust when corruption and danger are a way of life?

The CIA never left Latin America, and is facing catastrophic blackmail at the hands of an erratic Guatemalan drug lord: the infamous patrón of Antigua – Pablo Puentes. Desperate for a swift solution, the agency calls in their black operative fixer: John Carpenter.

John is a cold-blooded professional ready for the job. But the mission doesn’t have a simple fix. Pablo has a disastrous kill switch in place.

John is still haunted by the mysterious death of his best friend who died on a far too similar mission, and now is uncertain about how much he can trust his handler or his sensual partner.

Back at the agency, tensions are running hot as the stench of corruption is growing to a boiling point. If things aren’t put to rights – and soon – the entire mission will go up in flames and take the CIA down with it.

Only John Carpenter can bring this drug lord to justice and get the answers he deserves.

Because this mission is personal…

If you like the relentless tension of Daniel Silva and the gritty reality of Lee Child then you’ll love this first book in the John Carpenter Trilogy!

Zen Ghosts by John J. Muth #Halloween #duality #ghosts #ScholasticBooks

Summary:
It's Halloween. The trees are ablaze in fiery reds. Excited children don colorful costumes. And there's mystery and fun around every corner!

When Addy, Michael, and Karl finish trick-or-treating, their bags are brimming with treats. But the fun isn't over yet. Their good friend Stillwater the panda has one more special surprise in store for them. A mysterious visitor is about to tell them a spine-tingling story --- one that will fill each and every reader with wonder.

My review:
This is a beautifully illustrated book with all the colors you would expect to see in the Fall and at Halloween. It started out fun with the characters deciding what they wanted to be for Halloween. The story carried on right through the sorting and trading of candy. After that, the panda friend was to tell the children a ghost story.

At this point a ghost story is told by a seemingly look-alike panda. It is a real Chinese story ages old. This is where the book turns deep and thought provoking. It was a good story but the problem I had with it was the story was not meant for young children. In fact, if anything, the story was meant to be for adults who are studying Zen practices.

If you want a book that is for Halloween type illustrations (to a point), then by all means, get this book but be aware of what I mentioned above. I think you might even need to have a bit of pre-talk before reading.

Overall, I still give this book 4 pumpkins.

About James J. Cudney

James is my given name; most call me Jay. I grew up on Long Island and currently live in New York City, but I've traveled all across the US (and various parts of the world). After college, I spent 15 years working in technology and business operations in the sports, entertainment and media industries. Although I enjoyed my job, I left in 2016 to focus on my passion: telling stories and connecting people through words. My debut novel is 'Watching Glass Shatter,' a contemporary fiction family drama with elements of mystery, suspense, humor and romance. To see samples or receive news from my current and upcoming books, please subscribe with your email address at my website: https://jamesjcudney.com

What do I do outside of writing: I'm an avid genealogist (discovered 2K family members going back about 250 years) and cook (I find it so hard to follow a recipe). I love to read; between Goodreads and my blog at https://thisismytruthnow.com, I have over 900 book reviews which will give you a full flavor for my voice and style. On my blog, there is humor, tears, love, friendship, advice and bloopers. Lots of bloopers where I poke fun at myself all the time. Even my dogs have segments where they complain about me. All these things make up who I am; none of them are very fancy or magnanimous, but they are real and show how I live every day.

Review: Ghost Fever Mal de Fantasma by Joe Hayes #DiversityBooks #Halloween #ghost #MiddleGrade #ChapterBooks

Summary:
This tells the story of a haunted house in a poor little town in Arizona. Even when the landlord offers free rent, nobody moves in because they know a ghost lives there. That is, until Elena’s father rents it.
He doesn’t believe in ghosts. Lucky for Elena that her grandmother knows all about the ways of ghosts. She helps her solve the mystery of the “ghost on the roof” while Elena learns a very important lesson about life.

My review:

This is to me, a classic paranormal story. A house has been haunted and its inhabitants are a bit scared. In this case, the ghostly presence of a girl, speaks to the living and makes her understand why she died.

I have watched many a paranormal show where the ghost have been pushed out of a house without trying to find out why the are in limbo to begin with. I enjoyed that the daughter, Elena, in this book, not only helped this girl move on but she set things up so that another could live a good life.

This chapter book was written in English and Spanish which not only spoke to the authors style of writing but also the diversity of the characters in the book which were Hispanic. Some Spanish is intertwined within the English in order to make a strong point. That to me was interesting.

There are few illustrations, as again, this is a chapter book, but the ones that are in the book help give the spooky vibe that the book was meant to be.

I love this story and since the author is actually a story teller by trade, I would love to hear his verbal telling. This story deserves a 5 star.

Do no believe me? This book won the  Texas Bluebonnet Award for 2007.
