Are You Participating? #somethingwickedfall #readathon

Every year, Michelle, from True Book Addict kicks off her annual read-a-thon of Fright Fall. It is fun to read spooky sometimes. Usually though, mine is more for the younger set but still...

This year (in fact it is going on right now) she has included a kick-off of sorts. It is a 48-hour read-a-thon in which scary/horror is suggested but not required. There are no prizes for this one but just a fun time. I am on it!

As part of this, I have already finished a collection of spooky by the author, John Paul Allen called Dark Blessings. It is a short story collection but a few will give you goosebumps.

The other book I am reading and getting ready to finish is by the author, Scott Kenemore called The Zen of Zombie. It is actually more humorous than scary but hey, it's about zombies!

There are a few hours left for this read-a-thon. Join in if you want. At least tell me what you are reading.

Happy reading,
Michelle aka Naila Moon

#FrightFall Read-a-thon Ocotber 5-11, 2015 and Diverse Universe Oct. 4-17, 2015 #Diversiverse

I am once again joining Michelle at Seasons of Reading for Fight Fall Reading.
This fun week has everything to do with reading scary books but not necessarily blood and guts kind of books. We can read children's books of course but are asked to read at least one adult book throughout the duration.

Come back this week for reviews. Hope I get them all finished!

Here is my list:
The Devil's Glove by Cousin Vinny
My Babysitters A Monster by A.J. Cosmo
Weirder Than Weird by Francis Burger
Will Allen and the Great Monster Detectives by Jason Edwards

Maybe there will be more? Stay tuned!

PS> I am also participating in #DiverseUniverse this week too. Keep watching for all of these books.

#Review: The Witch's Garden by Louise Lintvelt/Illustrated by Kristin Wiman #FrightFall

Summary:
Past the mill, over the hill, deep in the wood... A witch's house stood.

Join the friendly troll on an exciting adventure as he sets out to outwit the witch and free the magical creatures trapped in her garden.

My review:
I have read and reviewed a few books from this author and was looking forward to reading this book as well. The only problem for me is, I suppose I was expecting more.

This is your typical "ugly witch" where she does evil upon those who come into her area or home. This "witch" does the same but turns magical creatures into a beautiful garden. She then comes upon another who undoes all her work and sets the creatures free. That's the book in a nut shell.

As I said, I was looking for more that I have come to expect from the author. It even seemed rushed at the end. However, her poetry was right on and that was the best part about this book as well as the illustrations that gave breathe to the book.

All in all, still not a bad book and for that, I give it three stars.

Disclosure: I was given this book for my open and honest opinion. The views expressed her are 100% my own and may differ from yours.

#Review: The Last Call by George Wier #FrightFall

Summary:
Bill Travis, an unmarried, unattached investment counselor rapidly approaching his fortieth birthday, conceives that he may not live the most exciting of lives, yet Julie Simmons, his first appointment that Monday, is deeply in trouble. She has taken a North Texas quarter horse racer and liquor baron named Archie Carpin--the last of a dynasty of criminals from the 1920's--for a ride and cleaned him out of a neat two million bucks. And thus begins the adventure of Bill’s life.

Ensues a chase north across Texas to recover the money and shake the pursuit of a couple of rednecks with a penchant for rifles and rigged explosives. Yet, through all this action the compelling tale of yet another mystery—an 80-year old missing person’s case—begins to unravel.

My review:
I picked up this book from Amazon thinking it would be a nice thriller book without all the blood and guts that I simply don't like. Well, it wasn't exactly thriller but certainly mystery as the book says on the cover.

I was a bit drawn in to this mystery girl, Julie. She seemed just like some people whom I have met before. She tells you just enough to intrigue you and keep you going but not enough to keep you out of getting into a mess. I was surprised to find out whom she was connected to at the end.

I kept wondering why the main character, Bill kept going even after she gets him into some hot water including almost getting killed a few times. I suppose like all things it is love. Hmmm?

The book was kind of like Julie and Bill, just enough to intrigue me and keep me going to read it but yet wondering why I am. It seemed slow in some parts but in others I was all in. Yes, it had its mysterious 80 year old case wrapped up with a little gun fight and dynamite!

In truth, I would have liked to see a little bit more "thrill" and maybe even a bit more mystery as that was mild in my mind, but overall, I liked this book. This was the authors first book in a series and I am sure his others will be good too.

He gets 4 stars from me.

Disclosure: I purchased this book on Kindle for my own collections.

#FrightFall Start!

FrightFall Read-a-Thon
I mentioned to you that I would be doing the FrightFall Read-a-thon a few weeks ago. Guess what? It is here and started today! I am pretty excited to join in this reading challenge as it will get me a little out of my comfort zone.

I decided to purchase a mystery/thriller on Kindle to start this frightfully good read-a-thon but will be reviewing several children's books too as I go along. I am excited and a bit scared (HA) to get going.

If you would like to join me and several others just click on the photo to the right and it will take you right to the link to sign up.

Happy reading!

Fall Fright Read-a-thon #FrightFall

FrightFall Read-a-Thon
Even though it is not officially Fall yet, in my mind it is! I love this time of year and what makes it even more exciting is all of the things that go on at this time.

To add to my giddiness this year. I am participating in the FrightFall Read-a-thon which begins September 29th. Who doesn't like to read scary books once in awhile? Or a good mystery? Or a thriller? I do! This is the chance to get to do that.

Would you like to join me and the few other participants? You can sign up with the link above and win a prize or two as well.  Have fun!
