#Review: The Dolphin Dentist by Cheryl DaVeiga #giveaway #childrensbooks #dentist

The Dolphin Dentist - No Sharks Allowed: A Children's Picture Book About Facing Fear for Kids 4-8 (Biff Bam Booza)About the book:

Fearless Flossy, a mighty great white shark, has a secret—she’s terrified of going to the dentist. Dr. Dribble, the big-hearted dolphin dentist, has a jaw-dropping fear of his own, and a strict “No Sharks Allowed” policy. When Fearless Flossy makes an unannounced visit to Dr. Dribble’s office, it’s the start of an underwater adventure like no other! This ‘fin-tastic’ story is a must-read for kids and parents alike. Young readers will be immersed in a tale of courage, compassion, and conquering fear, while giggling and cheering for these unlikely friends along the way.Dive in with a big Biff Bam Booza smile.

My review:

Take out your toothbrushes and your floss! The gentle dentist is in town...um, under the sea, to take care of a great-white sharks teeth problem. However, this shark queen is terribly afraid of dentist as much as he is afraid of her. What to do?

This well done picture book tells the tale of not only what happens but the main idea to be kind. Children reading this book can get the concept of kindness to others even if possibly being afraid. Of course the other main idea here is to take care of one's teeth as it is a part of overall health of the body. This may mean to face fears, as many people do have fear of the dentist.

I love this story coupled with the larger than life pictures and it was well put together. I loved the word usage too, some funny, some made up. SUPER-ATROCIOUS-HALITOSIS-ITIS is my favorite!
I was swept out to see as the story unfolded. This book deserves the 5 stars I am giving it.

#Review: Angels At the Table by Debbie MacComber #novels #Christmas

Angels at the Table (Angels Everywhere, #7)Angels at the Table by Debbie Macomber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book I have ever read from this author. I am not sure why I had not before because her sweet little angels with the cutest of names, get into a bit of mischief.
The budding romance in the story was complicated and a bit sappy but I kind of saw this story as the cozy of novels. Of course it ended up as a happy ending. (no spoiler alert intended)
It is no wonder why many of the authors books have become Hallmark feature movies, this one fit right in!

I really did like the book and it was just enough twist to keep me going. I did think the characters did not act their age and seemed more teenage-ish but even that was okay for me. Maybe it is because the story starts with New Year's Eve and morphs quickly to Christmas. Or maybe it was because the woman in the story did not give up her restaurant for romance with a man.

I know all the boxes ticked for me for a feel good book.

#Review: Velvet Snowflakes by Barbara Briggs Ward #Christmas #novels

I have read the Christmas series of books this author has written and never been disappointed. With this book comes beautiful reindeer and gorgeous dresses fit for any princess, queen, or bride.

That author always paints a picturesque Christmas scene. As in this book, the reader feels like they have gone home. I loved how the author weaved a handmade dress into a lovely story and deer as beloved pets. Although far fetched at times, it allowed readers to delve into a tale that would certainly be full of heartbreak, laughter, and love.

If you don't read another Christmas book this year, I highly recommend this one.
5 beautiful snowflakes.

#Review: Nursery Rhymes for Kinder TImes by Pam Gittleman #giveaway #rhymingbooks #kindness

About the book:

What happens when Three KIND Mice put their heads (and bodies!) together to get some cheese on top of the counter? Will Humpty Dumpty be left in pieces when his friends notice that he's fallen off the wall? And who will get bags of wool--and toys and books--from Baa Baa BRIGHT Sheep? Read all about the beloved characters from traditional nursery rhymes in this endearing collection of eight updated rhymes that nurture kindness, empathy and gratitude!

My review:

When I decided that I was going to review this book, I only knew that it was a rhyming book and the cover was cute. What I did not know is how adorable this book turned out to be and old rhymes transformed for a new generation.

I grew up with all of the traditional rhymes presented here, in fact, years later I would tell them to my own children and kids that I took care of teaching preschool. However, the new is pleasurable to read and gives new meanings.

I do want to note that the stories themselves are not the wow factor, the book itself is not intended for that purpose. However, I loved it and simply know that kids will too. The illustrations are so bold and with the cuteness overload it is for sure a winner!

Each rhyme has those cute little mice in each one and presents an emotion for young readers to talk to parents or educators about. If talking about it is not enough, in between each rhyme is a page of EMOJIS that gives pause to point and discuss feelings. Awesome! 😀

Since we are in a new millennium and different age of technology each story is also downloadable to hear on a computer or phone. Yes, I did listen to each one! This was specifically designed to help children who are in need of additional listening skills.

If that is not enough, resources and activities are also downloadable via QR code for further enhancements for those children who need help with stronger language skills.

This book has just enough bells and whistles needed to make it  a solid 4 star book. Don't believe me? This book has won multiple awards including the Mom's Choice Award for Excellence.

Pam has been an early childhood music educator for over twenty-five years with a passion for singing, rhyming, reading stories, and making music with preschoolers.

When Pam noticed that some children seemed unfamiliar with traditional nursery rhymes, and that parents and teachers were avoiding them because of their outdated, dark, and inappropriate nature, she set out to update them in a way that allows them to nurture kindness, empathy and gratitude. Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times® provides a memorable way to build language, musicality, and literacy through songs, stories and rhymes that children adore and adults can feel good about. The inclusion of resources that support social and emotional learning (SEL) make it easy for parents and teachers to engage with the children they love about the importance of being kind, empathetic and grateful.

The rhymes in the book can also be enjoyed as songs on the Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times album recorded by Raffi and Lindsay Munroe, as well as in videos on the Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times® Show on YouTube. (www.linktr.ee.com/forkindertimes)

The Changeling Returns by C. R. Merrill #giveaway #spotlight #YAFantasy

Being a fairy princess isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The Changeling Returns

by C.R. Merrill

Genre: YA Contemporary Fantasy

I hate being the new girl every school year. This time, the ‘queen bee’ of Parfrey’s Glen High School has decided I’m the enemy. Her mistake. Because like it or not—and it’s definitely not—I have powers, dark powers. I’ve tried to deny them, but they are getting stronger...

Fay Smith was three years old when she was kidnapped by the two queens of the Unseelie Court. For twelve years, she’s been moved from city to city to avoid suspicion, wanting nothing more than to belong somewhere and be normal. But she can’t remember anything about her real life, real home, or real family.

Soon she’ll be called to cast off her mortality and become a dark fey like her captors, serving on one of the three thrones of the Unseelie Court, trapped in an eternal power struggle with Mab and Titania. To escape, Fay will have to control her change from human to fey and defeat the two queens.

But she’s going to need help, which means she’ll have to make a truce and establish ‘frenemy’ status with the girl who hates her.

Christine Merrill wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember. During a stint as a stay-at-home-mother, she decided it was time to "write that book." She could set her own hours and would never have to wear pantyhose to work! It was a slow start but she slogged onward and seven years later, she got the thrill of seeing her first book hit the bookstores. Christine lives in Wisconsin with her family.

#Review: Twin Power:The Best Snow Day Ever by Benjamin and Kiyanda Young #giveaway #bookseries

About the books:

Sebastian and Simone are not just brother and sister. They are twins!

The stories and adventures that the twins experience will show all children how to use teamwork to accomplish tasks.

In this second book of the "Twin Power" series, the fraternal twins enjoy their favorite time of year, winter! They want to enjoy going out in the snow but have to work together inside first to get to go outside. Outside they encounter some bigger kids who beat them at a snowball fight.  They must learn once again to use their twin powers to overcome their nemesis.

Unlike the first book that focused on the fact they are twins, this book focused on working together. Yes, it also highlighted the two being twins but showed other kids that the two can work together to accomplish something great. Overall, that was the main message of this follow-up book and it did shine through.

I do want to mention that the illustrations in both books are colorful and large. If the readers look closely they will find some fun pals on each page that join in the fun.

Like the first book, in the back contained reading comprehension questions and also included fun activities to do. Cute little book.

4 stars

#Review: And the Trees Talked Back by Frederick J. Burns #giveaway #childrens books

About the book:

And The Trees Talked Back is a heartwarming tale of wonder, friendship, and self-discover that will captivate readers of all ages.

Meet Amanda, an extraordinary child with a unique gift — she can talk to trees.

Living in a quaint village with a mystical forest, Amanda's life takes an enchanting turn when she seeks out her inquisitive cat, Daisy. As the sun sets and the moonlight casts its glow, the duo embark on a thrilling night-time adventure.

As Amanda encounters ancient trees, she uncovers a world she never knew existed, where wisdom and acceptance coexist with fear and hatred. Amidst the rustling leaves and haunting shadows, she confronts the duality of nature, discovering the true meaning of good and evil. Her bonds with nature deepen and she learns to navigate the world where choices shape destinies.

My review:

I love trees! Yes, I am one of those tree huggers and kissers. Maybe that is strange ,but it made me want to read and review this lovely children's book. For me, to have a tree talk back would be awesome!

In this sweet book, the main character, Amanda, is just looking out for her kitten when she encounters the different personalities of trees that want to get to know a human.  Isn't that cool?

I loved how each tree she encountered took time to know her and she to know them. Oh yes, she encountered one that was afraid of her too. That tree's fear was based upon natural things for a tree, like being cut down by humans. But kindness prevailed and understanding won out. If this does not sound familiar to life, then  what is? I could not get enough of the tree to human conversation. This conversation also was for kids who could read fairly well. Although this book was most likely marketed as a picture book, it was anything but. The sentences are complex and meaningful.

If the story did not grab me enough, then there is the illustrations themselves. The author not only wrote the book but did them too. Each two page spread  had a specific kind of tree that accompanied the pages. All the art work was done in black and white which made this reader wonder what they looked like but that is where the story became appealing.

This is such a well done book and I hope that the author might do a follow up. Great job! 5 stars for sure!

DIsclosure: I received a copy of this book to review. The views expressed here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~Michelle, Reading Authors, Network

About the author:

Burns, always an artist on the inside, breaks through his trial attorney exterior at age 63, to write and illustrate his first children’s book, And The Trees Talked Back. Three years in the making, Burns strives to convey a world where commonalities are more important than differences, where empathy is more important than distain and where making friends is more important than creating enemies. With no formal art training, Burns enjoys working in and learning new mediums and styles. His art has won awards in juried competition, been displayed on billboards, in government offices, the D’Amour Museum of Fine Art, and now graces the cover of Dave Brinnel's second CD, ALONE. His detailed illustrations of trees using pen and ink with washes of watercolor have been compared to the fantastical illustrations of Arthur Rackham and Maurice Sendak. Burns lives in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts with his wife, Heather and two dogs, where he is developing ideas for his next book.

About the book:

Sebastian and Simone are not just brother and sister. They are twins!

They show little readers some cool things they can accomplish because of their "Twin Power."

Join them in their adventures to see how "Twin Power" and working together make being twins super fun ... and convenient.

"Twin Power" is the first in a series of Twin Power Books starring fraternal twins named Simone and Sebastian. The twins learn how to work together and teach little readers about what it means to be a twin and a best friend.

The stories and adventures that the twins experience will show all children how to use teamwork to accomplish tasks.

My review:
I have twin siblings and know  first hand how twins can be. They always have, what I call, the "twin thing" going on even when they are not close by.

The twins in this book have that same thing but it is called twin power.
The twins in this book are fraternal and tend to do everything together. The book explains that they were born together and although they look different, still do many of the same things together, but like all siblings, fuss with each other too. This book is a nice beginning to what twins are and aren't.

An addition to this book is reading comprehension questions in the back. This is a good idea and gives the reader a chance to delve into the book more than once. The book also included coloring pages in the back as well, that is a nice little perk.

Please, Thank You, and Excuse Me by Ashley Chadwick #childrensbooks #manners

Date Published: April 5, 2023

Publisher: ‎Mindstir Media

When your children are learning to speak, it can come out and grunts, screams, or yells.

This can make it hard to understand them. To help them through this tough time, start by getting on their level. Look them in the eyes and reassure them that it is okay to get frustrated. Then ask them to use their words with please, thank you, and excuse me. These three basic phrases set a foundation for the language you will share between you and your child. Just remember… Repeat, repeat, repeat. Stay with their consistent repetition. You might grow tired of it, but to your two-year-old, it’s the routine they need to develop.

Politeness is spoken worldwide and in every language, whether in public or private. The simplicity of kindness teaches that everyone matters in this world.

Ashley has been a professional nanny for over fifteen years and the owner of a nanny service. She incorporates nature with mild education and mannerisms in children's lives. #Spotlight: Gerry Burke by Gerry Burke #Giveaway #shortstories

Laugh, smile, snigger, snicker, snort and giggle with Gerry Burke's humorous short stories!

Dogmatic:

Featuring Dusty Rhodes, the K9 Kid & the Doberman Who Didn't Like Doughnuts

Every morning I take my constitutional along the beach path in the suburb where I live. The early risers are already there with their dogs, every conceivable breed.

All of the canines have a story to tell, so I thought I might like to speak out on their behalf. You will be surprised with the extent and nature of their adventures. In fact, these humorous dog tales are unbelievable.

We already laud our heroes in the form of Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, and Snoopy. I hope these captivating stories will now shine a light on the likes of Baloo, Atticus, and William, the Wet Nose Wonder. In the meantime, give your dog a bone.

Citizen Vain:

Stories From Down Under and All Over

Stories from Down Under and all over! Humility is not a common virtue among the rich and famous. The protagonists in these narratives come from all parts of the globe, and have experienced the dizzy heights of fame and fortune. These are people who have let vanity overcome wisdom. Tall poppies need to be cut down to size, and plotting their downfall has been my pleasure.

My Book of Revelations:

Stories that Burst the Bubble of Believability

History, heroes, horror, and Hollywood! Every story with a sting in the tail. Lady Godiva; The Charge of the Light Brigade; The Borgias; and Tales from the Old West: stories that never happened, but should have. Plus the heroes of today; crime-fighters, patriots, and protagonists of purpose. No wonder the villains never win. Of course, you can’t blame them for trying.

Gerry Burke received a Jesuit-inspired education at Xavier College in Melbourne, Australia, where he still lives. Before commencing his long career in advertising, the author was employed by an international mining company, which included a three-year stint in New Guinea. He also dabbled in the horse-racing industry, as an owner and breeder, with some success. Being a former accountant and advertising creative, no one expected Gerry to become a published author, but he embraced this initiative to stave off dementia.

He has since penned six novels, seven volumes of short stories, and two offerings of commentary and opinion relating to politics, entertainment, sport and travel. The PEST pseudonym was subjected to a sea change with the introduction of popular discount detective Paddy Pest to booklovers everywhere.

Most people see the garrulous gumshoe from Down Under as a cross between James Bond and Maxwell Smart, and he has been the protagonist in a number of the author’s humour-laden publications. In recent times, there have been diversions into Science Fiction and absolute fiction, all of which have won enthusiastic acclaim.

Mr. Burke’s credentials have been well established, with twelve of his books featuring as a winner or finalist in a variety of international literary competitions. Three volumes have received multiple citations.

Gerry is single and lives with photographs of his best racehorses.
