Review: If You Were Me and Lived In...Renaissance Italy by Carole P. Roman #multicultural #newseries #childrensnonfiction

In an upgrade from her original non-fiction series, "If You Were Me and Lived In...", author, Carole P. Roman now takes children on a historical ride. Children can emerge in cultural periods around the world while learning the experiences of children of the time period.

Some similarities in format are the same as the original series: foods eaten, clothes worn, and games played. However, this series is for the older child who wants to learn even deeper lessons in cultures. The reading is more complex with less illustrations. Although, the illustrations that are included are boldly done and add to the book.

One of my favorite sections of this book is page 16 and 17 where the author outlines how one's house, of richer means, would look in Florence, Italy. Page 17's illustration is a simple hand-drawn outline of the inside of the house. I loved this because again, the illustration perfectly showed what the author herself just wrote. As one who is a somewhat visual learner, this was perfect!

As a pseudo bonus, in the back of the book is an extension of some of the art and people who were important to the Renaissance period. Several additional pages are included and is an excellent source for a child (or adult) who wants to know more and why their importance was necessary for this time period. Also included, i  the ever present glossary which is a staple for the original series and much needed in this new series.

Excellent works all around and I am looking forward to reading more. If you don't believe in my review here, it should be noted that this book series has already won several awards and is considered a good source for homeschool.

5 stars!

#Review: If You Were Me and Lived In Germany by Carole P. Roman #childrensnonfiction #countries #multicultural

I love the "If You Were Me and Lived In..." series of books by Carole P. Roman. I am privileged to have almost the entire collection from around the world. This one is a view of Germany.

As with all of her books from this series, she follows a general format which includes: city capital, name for parents, names for children, money used, foods eaten, places to visit, school name, holidays.

Terms used throughout the book have a pronunciation key but as always, there is also a glossary in the back of the book.

This is the twentieth book in this series. As the author has gone along in the series, the books have become more sophisticated. As the books were originally written for her grandchildren, she has made them so as they have aged or are interested in a subject.

This particular book is closer to my heart because I have a nephew who was born and raised in Germany and a niece who was also born there. My nephew's mother is a native of Germany and I love hearing her dialect.
Carole P. Roman notes that there are different dialects in Germany and her book is a compilation of them.

One of the interesting things, which I have actually lived through, was the division between East and West Berlin. The author mentions this in the book and how the wall between came down. Awesome information for kids that would have not known about this.

Her illustrator, Kelsea Wierenga, mixed real-life photos with her bold illustrations. This too is awesome as it allows children to see what places are truly like. I love this concept!

Want to learn more? I highly recommend this book and the whole series. If you do not believe me, then it should be noted this series has won multiple awards and is noted to be an excellent homeschool resource.
Another 5 star book to me.

#Review: One to Ten: Squirrel's Bad Day by Carole P. Roman

Synopsis:

Squirrel is rushing along a tree limb when she trips, losing all her acorns into the rushing water of the river below. Angry and frustrated, she doesn't know what to do. Her good friend, Rabbit, lends both a sympathetic ear as well as a solution. Rather than get angry, Rabbit tells her, rate the problem on a scale of one-to-ten. By identifying and realizing the true importance of the issue, the issue may not seem so overwhelming. Adorable forest creatures help the sad squirrel put everything into perspective so he does not to get stuck in a rut over something that may not be a big deal after all.

My review:

This cute little story book is by Carole P Roman, a well established children's book author. I have read many of her books but this one was a bit of a departure. That's not a bad thing!

When I first received this book I thought that it was a normal counting book, to teach counting. I was very wrong! What this really is about is feelings and how a child can handle feelings. The method used is simple and one we could use everyday.

The illustrations are top notch which I would figure for the author's books. They are colorful and bold and help tell the story beautifully.

But I don't want to tell you much more because of course that would ruin the book. This book is by far five stars, but if you don't believe me believe the awards that she received for it.

Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump: An Oh Susannah Story by Carole P. Roman #scared #CarolePRomanBooks

About:

Susannah Maya Logan is not having a good day. She doesn't want to go to her best friend, Lola's sleepover. Susannah thinks the house is big and spooky, not to mention the ghost that is said to live there. Lola's big brother, Kai, loves to tease Susannah with scary stories.

Throughout her day, she sees people deal with things that scare them. Her sight-impaired friend, Macy, is terrified of unicorns, of all things. She sees a boy at a party who's frightened of clowns. Her teacher is afraid of getting a cold. Susannah realizes everybody is scared of something. She wishes she was more like Lola, who is not afraid of anything, or so it seems.

Susannah discovers people have different ideas of what is scary and what is not, and only they can determine the difference.

Join Susannah as she learns to confront her fears and not let her imagination prevent her from having fun.

My review:

This is the second book in the "Oh, Susannah" series of books. In this book, Susannah has to come face to face with here fears of the dark, creaky houses, and ghost. She learns that no matter who you are or what your age, people have a fear of something. She learns that how you can overcome that fear is best for you so that you can move forward. Susannah also finds out that if you "fear" something it may not mean that you are really scared but using it as a term of something unknown.

I enjoyed reading this second book. I like that this series has continued on with topics that kids seem to face everyday and that it is simply okay to discuss them with adults to get through them. Although there were only a few fears addressed in this book, it pointed out that different people, kids and adults alike, do not always have the same fears.

The only thing I missed here is that the cover, although cute, did not seem to match the book itself. I kept this book to read and review in October because it seemed like it would be a slightly scarier book (and maybe how to deal with that) or at least about Halloween. I saw pumpkins and ghosts on the cover! The only connection to Halloween was it was mentioned off handedly and not even as one of the fears (except for ghosts). Hmm...? Maybe that was the intentioned thought process but in the end, got dropped.  In any case, not a deal breaker for me.

Overall, even with the above noted, I still have to give the book 5 pumpkins and a high 5 for all the characters who courageously faced their fears head on.

#review: Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag by Carole P. Roman #carolepromanbooks

Summary:
It all begins with homework trouble and an invitation to a sleepover that she doesn’t want to go to. Would you want to go to a sleepover in a creepy house? Rather than dealing with her problems, Susannah stuffs them into her backpack. But how much can a backpack take? Will she be able to confront her worries before the backpack bursts? Or will she just continue to hide them away?

My review:
This adorable, 34-page book, is aimed for 3rd graders. The title caught my attention because I grew up with the song, "Oh Susanna". I thought this book might be a take-off of the song. I was wrong.

In fact, it follows along a third grade, only child, girl, who is just trying to navigate life.  She feels caught up in a world where her parents are overly busy, her school is overly trying, and her friend is...well, overly friendly.
This all happens in the frame of one day and it is truly overwhelming.

As the summary says, she stuffs all of it her backpack but then...well, of course I don't want to spoil it for you. However, in the end, she gets to voice her feelings and ask for help. Ultimately, this is what the book is about.

I liked that Carole P. Roman has taken yet another departure from her series of books. This book addresses the issues young students may feel when everything just seems to go bonkers and no one seems to listen. I liked it also sent a clear message to us adults that sometimes even we are doing too much and need to take the time for those things and people that really matter.

Terrific book. 5 stars. Don't believe me? The cover of the book has no less than 6 awards.

#Review: Navigating Indieworld:A Beginner's Guide to Self-publishing and Marketing Your Book by Julie A. Gerber and Carole P. Roman

Summary:
Social media guru, Julie A. Gerber and award-winning author of forty-three best-selling books, Carole P. Roman, team up to travel the winding road of self-publishing, promoting, and marketing a book. Join these two experts as they share their vast store of experience in an easy to read book.
Learn why you need a beta reader and the importance of a good editor. Make a list of what you need to do when choosing an illustrator. Compare the many ways to promote your book.

My review:
Having worked with Indie authors and being an Indie author myself, I have had to navigate all the issues with writing a book that these two authors explore. They mentioned time and time again that the act of writing the book is only half the battle and that yes, it can be a daunting task to get a published and seen but is worth it in the end.

They mention many people they have worked with from beta readers, to editors, to cover designers, to illustrators, to publishing. Included are links to many of these people. In addition, several chapters are dedicated to the marketing end which includes the use of social media, radio, advertisement, as well as book reviewers and bloggers.

If you are a new author reading my words then I recommend reading this book before you decide to publish. Keep it handy for reference because you will no doubt want to use it time and again even after your first book is complete.

Not only am I an author but a virtual assistant who has worked with authors to market their books. I would hate to see the pitfalls that can and do happen. However, I want to you to succeed too. Julie Gerber and Carole P. Roman outline those things too. If you take note, of their recommendations, then you have a good chance of maybe not falling trap to those things and have a better chance at succeeding and navigating the crazy but wonderful place they call "Indie World." 5 stars!

As as side note: I have worked with both Julie A. Gerber and Carole P. Roman on many projects for the last few years. I was pleasantly surprised that they mentioned me not only as an author but also mentioning this blog as a resource. I am truly grateful.

#Review: If You Were Me and Lived In...Series: India/Italy/Greece/Portugal by Carole P. Roman #Multicultural #DiverseBooks #CarolePRomanBooks

I love the "If You Were Me and Lived In..." series of books by Carole P. Roman. I am privileged to have almost the entire collection from around the world. This conglomerate of a review is for four more books in the series: Italy, India, Greece, and Portugal.

As with all of her books from this series, she follows a general format which includes: city capital, name for parents, names for children, money used, foods eaten, places to visit, school name, holidays, and glossary of terms in the back.

Check out below the summary for each and what I have to say about each of these award winning books. Each of these books are 5 star books to me.

Summary:
Let's travel to India! Land of bright colors and delicious spices, If You Were Me and Lived in...India, takes young readers on a road trip to learn about this interesting place. Children will learn how to say mommy and daddy, what type of currency is used, games that youngsters play and a lot of interesting facts about the beautiful land of India.

My review:
I am off to India, well, at least by book. I was very interested in this book because my Mom had a friend who was from India. She gave her two sari, one for Mom and one for me. We still have them this many years later. Also, Mother Teresa, my hero, lived there and took care of the people.

This time I find out that India is one of the second most populated countries in the world. I did not know that! In fact, I found out loads more that I did not know.
Of course, I learned the terms for Mom and Dad, where to go to school, and the favorite sport.

Even though I have take geography in college, I did not know about India's geographical nature of placement. How cool is that!

Summary:
Join Carole P. Roman as she visits the Republic of Italy. Learn what it is like to live in Rome, see the famous architecture, celebrate a favorite holiday and discover popular names for both boys and girls. Be fascinated with it's diverse and rich history and colorful traditions. On the way, you might learn a word or two in Italian!

My review:
I was lucky enough to visit Italy in 2000. So, I thought it would be interesting to read this book about Italy from a kid's perspective.
I had to smile at the author's dedication where she thanks the pizza place for help. Pizza is so different tasting in Italy but good none-the-less. Of course, as with all of the author's books, she mentions different foods one might eat. There are a lot of them in this book.

One of the places that is mentioned in the book is the Coliseum, although I have seen it, I did not know the complete information about it, like it was built by three different emperors or that sometimes,it was flooded. I learn something every day!

I also found out there is an important holiday that comes up on August 15th but you will have to read the book to find out what that is.

This was a fun read for me and yes, I did learn a little more Italian!

Summary:
In If You Were Me and Lived in…Greece , early learners get a taste of what their life would be like if they lived in Greece while being introduced to the birthplace of democracy. This exciting visit to Greece also introduces the important concept of democracy to children and highlights some of the other cultural contributions that Greece has made to Western civilization.

My review:
Greece is a place that I have always thought would be an interesting place to visit. After all, this is where the Olympics started! IT is interesting to know why it started and of course that too, is in this book.

I have seen and listened to the composer Yanni who is from Greece. He did a famous production there in one of the places mentioned in the book.

I have a friend who is from Greece (boy can she cook, I love Greek food!) Her grand-daughter calls her Ya-Ya which is the names the author tells about in the book. You would have to read the book to find out what Mom, Dad, and Grandpa are called!

In this book, like others, the author mentions foods to eat. Bring it on, I say!

After reading this book, maybe I need to get a ticket and go visit. What a wonderful overview of the country and simple understanding of where our countries political system stems from.

Summary:
Carole P. Roman travels to beautiful Portugal. This pro active book invites children to think about Portugal's many wonders from the sunny Azores to the wide variety of food.

My review:
I think I would love to travel to Portugal. According to the book, it is located on the ocean, which I love, and right next to another country. Basically, Portugal was a  trade route, one of course I heard about in college but did not remember until I read this book.
The views also mentioned in the book speak to me! It says they are a natural paradise. Of course reading the book will tell you what they are.

I liked that some of the photos were juxtaposed alongside of the cartoon characters. That is really cool.

It was fun to learn words that you would say in the language to ones Mom and Dad. I know no Portuguese so, trying out the words was fun and having that glossary in the back makes it easier.

The book also mentioned a fun holiday that I would surely like to visit and enjoy.

Overall, I liked this book and it is just one of the many places that would be great to see. Heck, I would probably take the book with me just to compare!

#Review: A Flag For the Flying Dragon by Carole P. Roman/Illustrated by Bonnie Lemaire #Giveaway #CarolePRomanBooks #atozchallenge

Summary:
It's business as usual on the Flying Dragon. Their mission is to find a flag for the ship. Captain No Beard sighs, "Being a captain is hard work," as he watches the busy crew preparing the vessel for their next adventure.

Polly is giving out pretzels; Linus is polishing a lamp. Matie is cracking coconuts, Cayla is stuffing holes, and Hallie is swabbing the deck. High overhead, trouble is brewing, and it is not the weather.

Mongo does not want any help from the newest crew member, and it is creating a hurricane of a mess on board.

The team must come together and find a task that will fit Zachary without interfering with their own fun. On the way, they acquire a flag that will unite them as both friends and crew.

Join the problem-solving crew of the Flying Dragon as they find a flag for their ship and a job for Zach.

My review:

As with all books that I have read from the Captain No Beard Series, the author has a lesson to tell. Working together for the common good is the key here.

This time, the crew is working on finding the newest member, and Grandson of the author, Zach, a job. At the same time, Captain No Beard is wishing for a brand new crew flag. What is a captain to do when his crew is upset and there is a problem? Work it out!

In the end, after a few mishaps, the crew manages to find Zach the perfect job and the perfect flag! What is it you say? Well, my readers, you would just have to get a copy of the book and find out.

I love this series and I am certainly a fan of this author. I love the tales and lessons each book brings. The illustrations always bring a liveliness to the books which make each book a lovely work of art as well as a good story.

Another 5 stars from me for this author!

#Review and #Giveaway: The Treasure of Snake Island: A Captain No Beard Story by Carole P. Roman #Kidsbooks #caroleproman

Summary:
After a fierce battle with a storm, the crew goes in search of treasure. Alexander, that is, Captain No Beard uses a map to locate it on the ominous sounding Snake Island. Bravely they dig until they find the best treasure ever!

My review:
I admittedly adore this author and her series of books. There is always a lesson to be learned with the Captain No Beard crew. This time the crew indeed faces a mighty storm but that storm they all face is fear. Each of the crew has a fear or something they dislike and choose to head straight into it.

Along the way they find a treasure that is so delightful that I could do nothing but smile. This treasure, at least I think, is one that the author has given her grandchildren many times over. Ah, but you will have to read the book my mateys to find out what that is.

The illustrations, as I have come to expect, are bold and colorful. The expressions of each character is fun and engaging.

Do not miss out on this awesome book! 5 stars!

#Review & #Giveaway: Fribbet the Frog and the Tadpoles by Carole P. Roman #atozchallenge #kidsbooks

Summary:
Fribbet's gone missing! The crew searches for the excitable frog and finally find him troubled and crying in the stern. Fribbet is very upset, and it's up to Captain No Beard and the crew to find out what's wrong. Fribbet the Frog and the Tadpoles is another great voyage into problem solving and friendship, as well as an adventurous trip into the imagination. Join the Captain No Beard and his friends as they learn the value of sharing our troubles with others and that help is always there when we need it.

My review:
This darling book from the author's Captain No Beard series features Fribbet the Frog.
Fribbett finds out that he has a lot of siblings now who mess with his stuff and just makes tons of messes and seemingly make his life miserable. He has a real problem but eventually tells his friends.

This book  is just about as much about friendship as it is growing family dynamics. Children come to learn that new siblings in the house does not mean they are any less apart of the family. In fact, the learn that they can teach their siblings things they already have learned. This book introduces in brief, a brand new crew member to the ship of the name of Zachary.  Congratulations to the author and the crew too!

I love this series and just like in all the books I have read thus far, there is always a lesson to be learned. I love that the author allows play time to be full of imagination and good ole' fashion fun!
Kuddos on another great book!

5 stars!

This exciting visit to Greece also introduces the important concept of democracy to children and highlights some of the other cultural contributions that Greece has made to Western civilization. Basic information is offered in a playful way that won’t overwhelm children."
