The Ledger by Steven Manchester #review #bookseries #novel

About the book:

Set in a medium-security penitentiary in the mid-1990s, The Ledger is a faith-based story that pulls back the curtain on prison life, allowing the reader a safe peek behind the wall.

Although told from three alternating perspectives—officer, inmate, and sergeant—many of the same questions are asked: Can light be found in the deepest darkness? What about forgiveness, redemption, and grace? And if the code is clear, “loyalty above all things except honor,” when should an officer cross the blue line to police one of his own?

My review:

I need to begin my review by saying that I love this author and everything he has written. This particular book. the second in a series, is a departure from what I have read before. The book needs to have a trigger label on it. If you have a family member that is incarcerated or is employed by a correction facility, then be forewarned. The book as a whole is fictional but it can read and feel personal.

Having said that, the author's writing style immediately places you right in the heart of the story. His original book in this series made you feel good and you were left with Hope and fuzzy bunnies.

This book also left you with Hope but not feeling necessarily so great. However, the overall message here is redemption. Do some of us human beings deserve redemption from the atrocities we have caused once we have left this world?  Does God forgive everything? The "ledger" shows it all, tells all, but does God still love us?

Again, I felt as if I had been plopped in as one of the characters, but I was viewing both sides: the seedier side of the inmates incarcerated and the side of those who worked there. Depending on what was happening behind the walls of the prison depended on how I was able to review.

The characters were well developed but also open and raw. There were times when I had to swallow hard and plow through the book or just had to put it down because the scenes were horrific and unfortunately, repetitive. This was not a reflection of the author and his writing but a nuance that described what happened before inmates arrived and after they arrived, many to start life sentences. But the book also described what could and likely did happen for those that worked there as well. Some succumbing to being no better than the ones that "lived" there. Others, upstanding.

As I pointed out earlier, what this book was really about was how do we serve God. In the beginning we are given choices alongside of what those choices can bring. We are given free will and what we do with it is up to us. We can use our free will for goodness and spread light into the world, or we can use it for darkness. God does not intervene until we are called "home" and the "ledger" accounted for.

Note: the only part of this book that seemed like it should have been maybe a novelette was the conclusion. Even though it was tied to a part of the book, it felt more like a tally of maybe things the author himself had witnessed as a correctional officer. He had noted early on that this was employment that he actually had done in his former life before becoming an author. The fact is, even though this book was fictional, I have no doubt that the author had seen some extremely cringy things and the ending was a culmination of those things but fabricated into a great story.

Hope in a Jar by Deborah Marcero #review #childrensbooks #bookseries #hope

About the book:

Llewellyn the bunny and his friends dream of many things. Some of their dreams are small, like learning to ice skate, visiting a friend, or acting in the school play. And some of their dreams are big, like going to the moon, or becoming a ballet dancer or a wildlife photographer. Their dreams feel so precious that the bunnies place them in jars for safekeeping. But when a storm comes and destroys their collection of jars, Llewellyn and his friends wonder: what's the point of dreaming if everything could be lost?

My review:

All people dream of doing special and not so special things. It seems appropriate to want to bottle those things up and hope they come true. The problem has always been, what happens when those dreams are shattered, just like in the book? What then?

I loved that that answer was addressed in this book for children. It did not sugarcoat the fact that not all dreams can come to fruition, but it did allow the dream of them. That is what is most important here. If children (and adults) cannot dream of something, hope for it, what is the point. The book makes it clear that even if something you hope for does not come through, let go of it and redream.

This book was an excellent read. The author also did the illustrations which made for a complete and wholesome book.

5 stars in a jar!

How to Catch a Daddysaurus by Alice Walstead & Andy Elkerton #review #series #childrensbooks

About the book:

The How to Catch Kids are at it again! This time, they're out to trap the Daddysaurus―a mystical creature capable of such amazing acts of kindness, bravery, brilliance and humor. The kids try to trap the creature with all his favorite activities, but will they succeed? Maybe all they need is a little sweetness to make this awesome Daddysaurus appear!

My review:

The "How to Catch A..." series I admit I have never read before so I have no books for comparison. Again, admittedly, I thought this book was cheezy but I absolutely see why kids love the series!

Who couldn't love all the ways the kids creatively try to catch this amazing creature? Who wouldn't love knowing about why this creature is so worth catching? I was intrigued and you would be too! Afterall, isn't Daddysaurus a rare breed?

The illustrations make this book. Done mostly in primary colors, the illustrations are bold and a bit larger than life. Again, kids will love it as I did. I found myself wanting to help them figure it all out. In the end though, they did and that is why the cheeziness left and became a terrific book.

5 stars.

The Calendar Kids Meet June by April Martin #review #months #childrensbooks #series

About the book:

School's out for the summer and June is excited to spend more time with her family on their summer vacation! This year June's family will be celebrating Father's Day during their vacation. Where will they go? Will June find the perfect Father's Day gift?

My review:

It is not too often to come across books that talk about specific months. This book does and is written by an author named after a month too. How fun!

This addition is about the month of June and begins right after school lets out. The teacher's names are clever as is the whole book. June's friends are also named after months and as I found out this is a series, they have their own books.

June is all about celebrating her dad and Father's Day. It is cute how she works so hard on her summer vacation to celebrate.  The ideas she comes up with are just more than a card, which is of course perfectly okay too. The book gives kids ideas but lends its pages to enjoy summer months too.

The illustrations I must mention because the author was self-taught and did a great job to show movement and boldness to her pictures.

A final mention has to be the recipe in the back for "Dad burgers", a journal of June, facts about June, and follow up questions. This is obviously written by a teacher and would be great series for any classroom.

5 stars.

Conglomerate #Review: If You Were Me and Lived in...Norway/Russia/Hungary/Scotland by Carole P. Roman #childrensbookseries

It has been a while since I reviewed any of the "If You Were Me and Lived In..." series of books by Carole P. Roman. I have been privileged to have almost the entire collection from around the world. This conglomerate of a review is for four more books in the series: Russia, Hungary, Norway, and Scotland.

As with all of her books from this series, she follows a general format which includes city capital, name for parents, names for children, money used, foods eaten, places to visit, school name, holidays, and glossary of terms in the back.

Check out below the summary for each and what I have to say about each of these award-winning books. Each of these books are 5-star books to me.

Disclosure: I received these books in exchange for my open and honest opinion. The views expressed here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~Michelle, Reading Authors Network

Summary:
Join in on a trip to the Northern Hemisphere and learn about Norway- The Land of the Midnight Sun. If You Were Me and Lived in... Norway describes many things that make that country unique and fun. Readers will be able to learn about the capital, common names, a beloved holiday, as well as favorite food and other fun facts.

My review:
I am off to Norway, well, at least by book. May 17th is Norway's Independence Day and what better time to read about this country Parties and parades are part of the celebration.
This time I find out that there is an ice hotel that is very popular and may be somewhere people like to stay for the celebration, plus you can see the Northern Lights.
Of course, I learned the terms for Mom and Dad, where to go to school, and a favorite sport, which is skiing.

Summary:
Carole P. Roman is taking students to Northern Europe again and this time it's to visit Scotland. You'll learn about the fascinating architecture that was inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. Whether your name is Ian, Connor, or Malcolm, you'll follow along and visit Loch Ness and hope to get a sighting of it

My review:
This time, I am taking off to Scotland and try to find the infamous, Loch Ness Monster. Seriously, who would not want to see him/her! She is after all famous.

One of the places that is mentioned in the book is in Edinburgh which is home to a most famous university that many people have attended to learn medicine, law, science, and engineering.

I found out that a mythological creature, the unicorn, is the official animal of Scotland and has been printed on currency. It was fun to find out the unicorn means: grace, happiness, purity, and healing. It makes you wonder where all legends come from.

One of the things to play is golf as it is a popular sport, but the Highland Games is what is most popular.

Of course, as with the other books in this series, I learned names of children, what they call their parents, kinds of foods, and what they name their school.

Summary:
Welcome to Hungary! Join Carole P. Roman and learn about this beautiful country in Central Europe. Packed with colorful illustrations, children will learn about the sights, currency, food, and even a few Hungarian words.

My review:
As readers travel the countries by book, we now take a stop to Hungary. This country is landlocked by other countries and has no ocean front waters. The reader finds out that its capital is the largest city but also one of the largest in the overall European countries. We also find out this city is cut into 3 areas by a most famous river. Also, Hungary is known for its numerous caves and stalagmites. Of course, you will have to read the book to find those places out.

In this book, like others, the author mentions foods to eat and the best place to eat is at Nagy's. No, it isn't a restaurant. Bring it on, I say!
Also like the other books, you find favorite sports and holidays.
An interesting thing about Hungary is the Rubiks Cube was created there. Awesome, I had no idea.

After reading this book, maybe I need to get a ticket and go visit. I would love to visit those caves!

Summary:

Continuing its globetrotting tradition, If You Were Me and Lived in... Russia explores the magic and wonder of this captivating country. As children ages three to eight take a leisurely stroll around Russia, they will come across some of the country's most recognizable sites, including the Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral, and the Red Square. Learn about Russia's yummy delicacies, like borscht and caviar, before playing popular Russian games like chess and "fipe"--a game children may know better as "tag"! Brimming with these and other fascinating facts.

My review:
This last stop finds the reader in Russia. When I was growing up, Russia was not a place that any USA kid would want to go to. Oh, how times have changed and this book shows us the beauty of Russia.

This was an interesting change for the author as she explored this book and its contents with one of her grandsons on a lazy afternoon. Fun!

One of the places mentioned in the book is Moscow. I have known about that city, but it was interesting to learn that it is the most populated city in Europe and number five as the biggest. It was fascinating to learn that Russia is so big that it has 9 time zones. Whoa!

As someone who finds languages interesting, learning words that you would say in the language was awesome.  I know not the Russian language, so, trying out the words was fun and having that glossary in the back makes it easier.

As with all the books, sports and games is mentioned, as was holidays. I found out I had owned a set of Matryoshkas when I was a kid. Read the book to find out what that is.

Overall, I liked this book, and it is just one of the many places that would be great to see. Heck, I would probably take the book with me just to compare it to the actual place!

Aliens in Underpants Save the World by Claire Freed man and Ben Cort #review #aliens #childrensbooks #series

About the book:

The beloved aliens from Aliens Love Panta Claus are back—and this time they are on a mission to save the world!

My review:

I have to begin by saying this is a series that I had never read before, so I was unfamiliar with any characters from previous books.

I thought the premise of aliens in underpants was funny to begin with but the way they saved Earth is ludicrous. The audacity of those aliens!

I loved the larger-than-life illustrations and the colorful beings both alien and human. Kids would no doubt laugh as I did look at them.

The book is all written in simple rhyme and I could see kids wanting this book read repeatedly.

Overall though the book was okay to me and not fantastic so that is why I am giving it 3 stars.

Yearbooks & Yo-Yos: Crushing the '80s by Steven Manchester #novel #nostalgia #bookseries

Synopsis:

It’s the summer of 1986, a season of transition from childhood into young adulthood. The three brothers—Wally, Herbie, and Cockroach—are back at it and crazier than ever. While innocence gives way to higher expectations and responsibility, the boys discover that there’s no reason growing up can’t be insanely fun.

My Review:

Once again, I find myself in awe of this author. In the 3rd book of his now first trilogy, I would swear he plucked my brain to write all about the 1980s specifically this time, 1986.I did come to realize that the author graduated from high school at the same time I did.

The book begins in the present time (2025) and takes us back to that fateful year and trips us through a summer of new beginnings, growth, understanding, music, language, and yes, some heartbreak. This book watched the three brothers grow and learn about life through the eyes of friends who supported them, parents who loved them, and just pure grit.

I read along laughing and crying at many of the scenarios the family encountered. I found myself engrossed in it all. I remembered so many similar things I did like skating at the roller rink, summer love, and rocking out while waiting for college to begin. Although one of my grandparents passed away later, (spoiler alert) I related completely with the chapter, "Goodbye". In fact, a tiny healing took place that I am sure the author probably would have not expected by this reader or any other.

Overall, a fantastic and a must read. I do suggest reading the first two books to get a feel of the characters.

5 stars!

The Story of Fannie Lou Hamer by Margeaux Weston #review #civilrights #votingrights #biographies #series

About the book:
Fannie Lou Hamer was a key figure in the fight for civil rights in the United States. Before she became an important voice for equality and justice, she was a little girl who loved to learn and worked hard to help her family survive. Explore how she used her powerful voice to improve her community and encourage others to elect leaders that would treat them fairly.

My review:
I have always known about suffragist throughout history. They were the vocal women who stood up to gain voting rights for women but they were white women. Fannie Lou Hamer was also a suffragist in her own right but of course, I had never heard of her until I read this book. Is that sad? Yes!
What is even worse is she lived in my lifetime, and I still did not know who she was. However, now I know who she is and was.

The summary says she was a key figure and boy was she! From the time she was young she was fighting to be seen. A child who contracted polio and one of 20 children, she had to use her voice to be heard. I was thrilled to read about how she at first was not noticed but kept giving speeches and showing up to rallies. She kept telling others that African American people deserved the right to vote because they also deserved to be treated as human beings. She believed it so much that she even went to jail for it and was brutally beaten but she kept fighting. She marched with key figures, like Martin Luther King, and bodily ran for office several times. Finally, being elected as a representative to the Democratic National Convention. She made herself known and because of her, black women today are able to vote and run for office without fear. Thank you to Fannie Lou for your fearlessness and standing up against racism.

5 stars.

Lawn Darts & Lemonade: Tackling the '80s by Steven Manchester #review #1980s #comingofage #bookseries

About the book:

It’s the summer of 1984, a season of dodging lawn darts and chugging lemonade—or at least the discolored tap water Ma tried to disguise as lemonade.

Growing up is never easy, no matter what era you do it in. For generations, teenagers have suffered peer pressure, bullying, fear of rejection, and a sadistic obstacle course of one unexpected challenge after the next. Three brothers, Wally, Herbie, and Cockroach, learn that the past can be filled with questions—even shame and regret—while the future might be shrouded in worry and fear. But staying in the moment, now that’s where the sweet spot is.

My review:

Steven Manchester has done it again! This book is a follow up standalone to this author's book, Bread Bags and Bullies. This book follows along the three brothers as they navigate their way through the early '80s Having fun, the pangs of growing up, getting new jobs, and enjoying Summer is where it is at.

As a GenXer, growing up in the '80s this book spoke to my heart. I was able to immerse myself in the many aspects that the brothers had and likely would have hung out with them. Drinking lemonade from my homemade stand, and adventures until the lights came on at night was all the rage. I enjoyed the humor as well but feel the tug of a time gone by.

Thank you to the author, Steven Manchester, who knows just how to spin a tale of life itself from someone who remembers. The memory lane was remarkable. 5 stars

Mistletoe and Martians by Samuel DenHartog #martians #aliens #mars #humor #Christmas #traditions #bookseries

ABOUT THE BOOK:

"A whimsical journey to Snowville, a charming town where the festive spirit of Christmas is about to encounter the curiosity of visitors from Mars. As the Martians land on Earth with a mission to understand the peculiar and heartwarming traditions of Christmas, they find themselves wrapped up in a series of humorous and endearing adventures. From misunderstanding mistletoe to a comical attempt at caroling, their journey is as heartwarming as it is hilarious."

MY REVIEW:

I tend to like martian/alien stories so I thought getting this book would be a fun read. I was not disappointed at all.

Martians land on Earth as they are on an investigation quest. It just so happens they land during the season of Christmas. Fortunately, they are welcomed by the humans and  get immersed in their holiday customs. They even get parts in a nativity play!

Humor is intertwined as the martians try to navigate their way in understanding and peace. The humans learn some of the ways of "Mars" too. We  all know martians come from Mars!

I liked this book enough to keep reading it.  It was fun and an extremely light read. I do think if the author had flushed out some of the characters even more, it would have been an "A" book.

I did enjoy the martian characters and their honest mistakes but truly trying to understand.

What I enjoyed most was the coming together in peace and harmony and the meshing of two very different cultures. This was a great statement on how things really should be.

I give this book 3 stars.

The Hayley Mysteries: The Haunted Studio #Review #MiddlegradeMysteries #bookseries

SYNOPSIS:

When Hayley gets the lead role in a new TV show called Sadie Solves It, she's so excited...even if there are rumors of hauntings surrounding the Silver Screen Studios. It's LA, she thinks―there are ghost stories everywhere!

But to her surprise, strange things actually start happening as production ramps up. Lights flicker, cold blasts of air come out of nowhere, and one day the electricity is cut to the studio entirely with no clear cause. Can Hayley and her two best friends solve the mystery of the haunted studio...before it means curtains for their show?

MY REVIEW:

I love a good mystery book. This is kind of one of those that has a mystery within a mystery because of the characters that are involved. How cool to have kids that are actors turn sleuths. The story line runs along their "lines" as Haley and her team "solve" the clues in the TV series, real-life clues are revealed.

This book kept me going with each page turn. I wanted to know who done it and just when I think I had it figured out...Twist! I loved the suspense, the fun, all the surprises that went with this book.

Included in this book were some great illustrations. They were all in black in white but they added to what was already a good book.

I give this book 4 starts.

Get a Behind-the-Scenes Look at A Room For Murder

A few years ago, one of my author friends reached out to ask me if I’d like to be in an

anthology that was geared around female sleuths.

At the time, I was writing a standalone psychological thriller (The Third Nanny), and I

wasn’t sure where I was going to with my Secrets of Redemption psychological thriller

series (I had just completed Book 5 of what would end up being a 9-book series, but at

the time, I didn’t know I still had four more books to write).

But regardless, neither of those books or projects fit the “female sleuth” theme.

Of course, that didn’t stop me from saying yes. I had six months to figure it out. Surely I

could come up with a female sleuth story that somehow tied into my published books by

then.

And sure enough, about a week later, Charlie Kingsley whispered into my ear, and just

like that, two stories fell into my lap. A Grave Error, which was the first Charlie Kingsley

story and the one that ended up in the anthology, and The Murder Before Christmas,

which ended up being Book 1 of the Charlie Kingsley Mysteries.

When I wrote A Grave Error, I knew that wasn’t Charlie’s first case. The first person who

called Charlie for help was Nancy, who owned The Redemption Inn, as the resident

ghost had been blamed for a murder.

I knew I wanted to write it at some point, I just wasn’t sure when. The series arc that had

been slowly building out would be disrupted, and I was unclear on how it would all fit

together. Could I go back in time even as the series moved forward? How would the

readers react?

But, as these things go, it all fell easily into place when the time was right. Darla made

an appearance in A Cornucopia of Murder, and I knew then that Charlie’s first case had

to be the next book. And I also knew it would be the perfect fit for my Charlie Kingsley

Cozy Novella series, a side series of standalone novellas that cover shorter cases.

And thus, A Room For Murder, is now finally available. Readers will get a peek at how it

all began, from first meeting Wyle to Pat becoming her sidekick.
