Surrogate For A Vampire by Nina R. Schluntz #Vampires #Giveaway #Halloween #spotlight

Every vampire has one goal- to find a surrogate human strong enough to birth their heir.

Surrogate for a Vampire spans three vampire love stories entangled around the fate of one man, who refuses to be a human, a traditional surrogate, or a vampire.

Nina Schluntz is a native to rural Nebraska. In her youth, she often wrote short stories to entertain her friends. Those ideas evolved into the novels she creates today.

Her husband continues to ensure her stories maintain a touch of realism as she delves into the science fiction and fantasy realm. Their three cats are always willing to stay up late to provide inspiration, whether it is a howl from the stray born in the backyard or an encouraging bite from the so called “calming kitten.”

Tagline: It’s hard being a cop in the future. It’s even harder when you’re a vampire.

Book Description:

Nick frowned, staring around at the alley floor.
It hit him again.
There was something wrong with this blood.
It smelled too good.

It smelled way, way too good…

Vampire with a past and homicide detective, Naoko “Nick” Tanaka just got transferred to the NYPD, where he works as a “Midnight,” or vampire in the employ of the human police. Like all state-reg’d vamps, he gets his food delivered to his door, lives in government housing, and basically can’t sneeze without the U.S. government knowing about it.

More than anything, he just wants to be left alone, to endure his immortality in peace, but he’s barely in New York two weeks when things start to go sideways.

It all starts with his new case––a case involving dead hybrids, graffiti that tells the future, a kid who shouldn’t exist at all, and a possible conspiracy involving the richest humans in New York.

That doesn’t even get into the school principal, a woman with secrets of her own, who has a deeply unsettling effect on him.

Nick finds he can’t get personally uninvolved with any of it. Instead, he gets sucked in even deeper, until he’s pretty sure he’ll end up forcibly reprogrammed by his human owners––assuming they don’t just rip his heart out of his chest and be done with it.

Vlad the Rad by Bridgette Barager #Halloween #vampires #review

Synopsis:

Vlad is always getting in trouble at Miss Fussbucket's School for Aspiring Spooks. Unlike the other little vampires, witches, mummies, and ghosts, Vlad isn't very interested in learning spookiness. That's because...Vlad loves to skateboard! How can he possibly think about being a good spook when all he wants to do is practice his latest gnarly trick? Maybe Vlad can find a way to do both!

My review:

Vlad, being a vampire takes the reader on a wild spin through the halls of his school. He drives the principle crazy and  upsets his fellow students. What is a skateboarder to do? After all, he has no interest in doing school work or scaring people. Skatebook tricks is his motivation.

This book gives the reader a twist on what a vampire is supposed to do. The book's illustration are done with muted greens, black, and red colors to give the effect of spookiness but not be too spooky. The student characters are cute monsters, ghosts, and goblins in school uniforms. Vlad wears huge glasses and has fangs but looks nothing like the vamp he is supposed to be.

The ending is totally unexpected but stays true to Vlad's character. I liked the author did that because it shows kids that you can be who you want to be, but still live in the guidelines of society without losing yourself.

What a fun book! This is terrific for any little skateboarder in your life.
It gets 4 pumpkins from me.

Review: The Vampire Knitting Club by Nancy Warren #Paranormal #cozymystery #vampires

Summary:

Vampires who knit
A troublemaking witch
Who killed Granny — and is she really dead?

My review:
This is the first book in a series but is also a stand-alone book. I seriously loved this cozy mystery.

The main character, Lucy, is trying to find herself when she goes to visit her beloved grandmother. However, upon arrival, she finds that her grandma has died and she has suddenly inherited her Grandma's knit shop, a family secret, and a cast of interesting characters who just happen to be vampires that knit.

Of course, being a cozy, a murder happens and minor chaos ensues. I enjoyed the fact the vampires helped out with the shop and taught Lucy a thing or two. They also protected her just as they had her Grandmother. I did not know who the actual murderer was until near the end even though there were clues. The family mystery discovery and dissolving were also well done. The only thing I thought was maybe the chapters should have been switched as they were both near the end but, that is personal preference.

One major thing I loved and a running theme throughout the book was acceptance of people no matter who (or what) they are. It was loud and clear and I would hope that theme shows up in future books.

Great job! 5 stars.

Day 1 #Review: Vampire Boy's Goodnight by Lisa Brown #Halloween #CryptKeeper2017

Summary:

When the sun goes down and everything is wonderfully cold and dark, a vampire boy and a little witch go searching for children in the night.
But this is no ordinary night. It is Halloween, and what they find may surprise them. . . .

My review:

This is an adorable book that I could see myself reading over and over. Bela and Morgan are "real" vampires and witches who want to know about real children. Their adventure takes them to a local Halloween party. What happens there will tickle the reader just a bit.

What I liked most about this book is the subtle insertions in the illustrations. Children who read the book may not be aware of them and I felt it was more for adults reading to children. For example, the raven in the window sill or the pictures of scattered books with popular titles like, "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. There are many to be found and quite clever.

This is a sure win to have on the Halloween shelves and gets five pumpkins from me!

Review of Good Intentions by D. N. Simmons

Blurb:

Scitech Labs was handsomely commissioned by the United States Military to design a revolutionary serum that would create the ultimate soldier. If successful, the soldier would have an increase in endurance, strength, awareness and overall speed. They would become the true super soldier. That's if everything went according to plan.

Scitech put its best scientists on the project and gave them a time limit to complete the job or else. With the pressure on and the stakes high, Vincent Masterson and his team put everything they had into the project.  Everything was looking hopeful until an experiment went horribly wrong. The scientists mutated their specimen's DNA, turning it into something monstrous. Now, life as we know it will never be the same.

As it stands, the only thing that can save them is one of the two things they should be running from.
Can the human race survive being caught in a bloody war between two vicious predators?

My review:

When I was first asked to review this book, I was told that if I liked zombies and vampires, I would like this book.

To be honest, the books I had read prior to this could be considered light reading and very tongue in cheek compared to Good Intentions. From almost the start of the book I was thrust into the characters lives, who they were, and what made them tick.

The scientist, Vincent Masterson was generally a good guy who cared about humanity. When money and the possibility of saving humanity is thrown at him by the government, that persona went out the door along with his ethics. In turn, chaos of epic proportions ensues causing wide spread terror and zombies roaming the earth.

It seems no one or nothing can stop the zombies from killing and feeding on the non-infected humans. In fact, as it turns out, the zombies are able to infect another race, the vampires, who have to come out of hiding to save not only themselves but the human race as well.

There is non-stop gore in this book. I swear to you that if it was possible, the pages themselves would have dripped with blood and guts. I made the mistake of reading this in the darkness of night only to have a bit of trouble going to sleep.

Along with all that, there is a bit of heavy language but nothing that would make me shut the book. I whole heartedly was into this book and read it in no time. My only disappointment? It ended abruptly just as I was really getting into it. I had absolutely no realization that this was only the first in a series!

All in all, good book but I think probably an average read for those who really like this genre.
In any case, D.N. Simmons does a good job and kept my interest and therefore deserves 4 stars.
