A Penny For Your Thoughts by Sherrill S Cannon #review #poetry #love #loss

Synopsis:

Have you ever loved, been loved, been confused about love, or suffered from loss of love? All these feelings have been captured and shared in the word of heartfelt poems, compiled over many years by a retired teacher and award-winning author.

There are three sections in her book: Heads, Spinning, and Tails . . . (Love & Loss: Coin Toss?). The variety of lyrical poetry forms includes free verse, blank verse, haiku, and sonnets. Some poems are simply plays on words.

My Review:

This book is a first in a two-part series of poetry books written by this author. I have read both already but read them in reverse. It did not matter because poetry stands alone. However, the poems are categorized into sections.

As I have also read her children's books, which are mostly rhyming, she parts from this in this book.

Some of the poems are short haiku and others are longer prose. All of the poems, the author writes about love and loss.

The poetry is so well written, you can get lost in the reading of them. In the last section of the book, entitled, "Tails of Heartache and Anguish", I found myself crying as I could relate to the feeling.

If you enjoy poetry or simply want to read a short 154 page book, this is for you! 5 stars.

Peter and the Whimper-Whineys by Sherrill S. Cannon #childrensbooks #coloringbooks

I read the original version of this book back in 2016. My original review is below. I love that the author is turning some of her best sellers into coloring books for a newer generation. The story is the same and worth telling, but children can now color Peter and the cast of characters as they learn about what it means to be whiney. Some adults could learn this lesson too! Still 5 stars! ~Michelle, Reading Authors Network

------------Original review of the book----------
I think if there was one book to read to children about being whiney, this is it! I loved the re-hashed family story that the author put her own spin to. Apparently, this story had been told by her own mother many times over, the author simply put it to rhyme. She did that very well, I might add.

This story is meant to be a "moral" story making note of consequences for ones actions. I was totally immersed! Even being adult, I got it and kids would too.

The illustrations were top notch which is quite interesting since they were all in dark and muted colors for most of the book. This may seem odd for a children's book but actually it is quite purposeful in this case and worked well.

Every kid, everywhere, needs to read this book. 5 stars without a doubt!

Review: The Golden Rule Coloring Book by Sherrill S. Cannon #coloringbooks #childrensbooks

The Golden Rule Coloring book is the second version to the author's original book of the same name. This version was transferred into black and white making it effectively just what it is, a coloring book. The only exception to that is her books which are colorfully highlighted throughout. This is a signature for the author who's illustrator, Kalpart, has been with her from the beginning.

I read the original book but do not recall if I ever actually reviewed it so, I am thrilled to be getting a second chance. The book begins with two cartooned children looking for the "golden ruler". The look high and low for this ruler, even thinking that maybe it is actually a king!

Eventually, they find out the the Golden Rule is not a thing but an idea. An idea of how we would want to be treated and to treat other as such. I remember this as a child. Do you?

"If you want to make friends,

you must be polite

And Treat them the way

that you know you would like."...

~Sherrill S. Cannon

The author, poetically, raises this theme throughout the book by demonstrating how this can be accomplished. Kalpart's illustrations are paired perfectly and as with her other books is a great combination. This is certainly a feel good and great coloring book to get.

If you want more proof, the book has won a Book Excellence Award Gold Medal, eLit Gold, Reviewers Choice Silver, Children's Literary Classics Silver plus Seal of Approval, Mom's Choice Silver, Readers Favorite Finalist Award, IAN Book of the Year Finalist and Pinnacle Achievement Award.

5 stars!

David's ADHD by Sherrill S. Cannon #review #childrensbooks #differentabilities #atozchallenge

Synopsis:
Does your child have ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)?

Meet David, one of award-winning author Sherrill S. Cannon’s “Classroom of Kids,” who manages his ADHD with the help of classmates.

David discovers ways to cope with his hyperactive brain, while learning how to calm and soothe his ADHD. Solutions include setting daily schedules and following simple rules that regulate behavior. His teachers and therapists encourage using the computer for academic advancement, and to establish a pattern for study as well as for occasional recreation. David not only learns self-control and communication skills, but is able to fit into the classroom and make friends.

My review:
There has not been one book that Sherrill S Cannon has written that I have not liked. Her stories for children have always been point on and needed to help children help themselves. This book is no exception.

This time the author tackles the problem of ADHD but from the standpoint of the child who has it, "David". David's problem is causing disruption in his parents, school, and himself. With the help of his classmates and family, he learns ways to control his behavior and gain  support.

As always, Kalpart illustrators do an excellent job in making Sherrill's "kids" come to life with bright and bold illustrations. Also, don't forget to look for other books by the author that have been cleverly hidden.

Told completely in rhyme, this book is more than just a book to help children to understand other kids like David. This book is a resource that should be in every home and school! In the back of the book are resources parents can use to help their own children who suffer from ADHD.

I highly recommend this 5 star book!  Amazon

#Review: My Little Angel by Sherrill S. Cannon #kidsbooks

Summary:

Share a day in the life of a little girl whose tiny guardian angel named Angela sits on her shoulder to keep the child safe and guide her through the day.
Her activities include getting ready for school, crossing the street, being polite and kind to friends, learning her lessons, fastening her seatbelt while traveling, being aware of stranger-danger, praying for her pets, and reminding her constantly that she is loved.
My review:
It has been awhile since I have read and reviewed one of Sherrill Cannon's books, I am so glad I have for today. As with all her books, there are lessons to be learned that children as well as adults should get. This time the author approaches the subject of doing the right things. The "moral" compass is directed by the angel, Angela, who helps the girl take care of herself, her pets, and others.

As with all the books I have read from this author, her poetry is top notch and the illustrations that go with it always match well. Her illustrator is fantastic and she uses the same one throughout all of her books which brings a consistency and one I have come to expect.

In the back of the book she notes that she has hidden some of her previous books within the pages. She invites the reader to see if they can be found. This too is a consistency throughout her books and I enjoy (as kids would) looking for the hidden books. There are also questions to help the reader come to fully understand the theme of the book. The questions are well thought out and purposely directed. I know that this comes from the years of teaching the author did.

Once again this is a book that should be on the "must read" list.

5 stars from me!

#Review and #Giveaway: Gimme-Jimmy by Sherrill S. Cannon/ Illustrated by Kalpart

Summary:
How a Bully Learns to Share ... "James Alexander's nickname was Jim, But nobody would be friends with him. No one wanted to play with Jimmy, For Jim Alexander always said, "Gimme." Thus begins the rhyming story of Jim Alexander, whose nickname was Gimme-Jimmy because he was a greedy and selfish bully. Imagine Jimmy's concern when he found that every time he said the word "Gimme," his hand grew larger! Jimmy was happy to discover that when he was polite and said, "Please" and "Thank you," his hand began to shrink. He started practicing his new "Polite Rule" and found out that it was much more fun to share.

My review:

This book is one of a series of books that the author has done to teach children manners. This time she approaches the subject of not sharing and being a bully, which by the way, has a running theme throughout all of her books.

As with the last book I read from Sherrill S, Cannon, this books is somewhat of a "moral" book that takes note of ones actions. In this case, Jimmy who constantly takes things from people, doesn't share, and who is just not nice to people learns that he will be in big trouble every time that he says "gimme".
I found what happens to Jimmy humorous but it also made the point quite well and he learns his lesson. Children reading this book will make the connections needed but will also find the humor in it too.

As with all the books I have read from this author, her poetry is top notch and the illustrations that go with it always match well. Her illustrator is fantastic and she uses the same one throughout all of her books which brings a consistency I have come to expect.

In the back of the book she notes that she has hidden some of her previous books within the pages of "Gimme-Jimmy". She invites the reader to see if they can be found. What fun!

This a simply awesome book and a book that should be on the "must read" list. 5 stars from me!

#Review: Peter and the Whimper-Whineys by Sherrill S. Cannon/Illustrated by Kalpart

Summary:
"In a house in the forest all covered with vines, Lived a very small rabbit who did nothing but whine." Thus begins the rhymed story of Peter and the Whimper-Whineys. Peter's mother warns him that if he cannot stop whining and crying, he'll have to go live with the Whimper-Whineys. His adventure continues as he later hops into the woods and finds lots of frightening Whimper-Whineymen! He discovers that the Whimper-Whineys are very ill-mannered and rude, and that everything is sour in Whimper-Whineland. He decides his mother was right...If only he can get back home...!

My review:
I think if there was one book to read to children about being whiney, this is it! I loved the re-hashed family story that the author put her own spin to. Apparently, this story had been told by her own mother many times over, the author simply put it to rhyme. She did that very well, I might add.

#Review: The Magic Word by Sherrill S Cannon/ Illustrated by Kalpart #kidsbooks #manners

Summary:
The Magic Word is one that everyone needs to learn. "Elisabeth Keys never said thank you, excuse me or please. She made fun of people, she'd argue and tease. She took what she wanted whenever she could, Elisabeth's manners were not very good." So begins the rhymed story of Elisabeth, who discovers her lack of friends when no one wants to come to her birthday party. Her mother suggests that she learn to be considerate of others and to say "please" as well as "thank you." She should treat others "the way that you know you would like," and should "think more about others and less about you." When Elisabeth goes to school the next day, she remembers her mother's advice and uses the magic word "please." She also tries to become more thoughtful of others. Imagine her pleasure when she returns home to find out that her new friends are all coming to her birthday party.

My review:
We all know the "magic word" but do we all use it? I like that the author has introduced such a simple concept in this book that teaches children to say please and thank you. I feel some adults could learn this lesson too.

The author's poetry is purely awesome as I have come to expect from Sherrill Cannon. I will say though, I was not overly impressed with the illustrations, in fact, I thought they did nothing for the book and that the author's poetry could have stood on its own.

This book can easily be read by an emerging reader or someone else reading to a child. Certainly the ideas described in the book should be discussed together either way.

I give this book 4 stars.

#Review: Santa's Birthday Gift by Sherrill S. Cannon #Christmas #ChristmasSpirit #Kidsbooks

Summary:
If your child or grandchild has ever wondered where Santa fits in with the traditional Christmas story, now you can read them Santa’s Birthday Gift. Finally, a book that ties two holiday traditions into one inspirational tale of wonder – as Santa brings gifts to baby Jesus. The cleverly-written, rhyming book reveals Santa’s adventure from toy maker to star follower -- right into the heart of Bethlehem where he meets Baby Jesus in the manger. Delivering toys to a king is a touching experience for both Santa and readers alike, as they discover where the tradition began -- Santa makes a promise to Jesus to bring gifts to good boys and girls each year on Jesus’ birthday.

My review:
I saved this review to be as close to Christmas as possible because  of the nature of the story. It begins with the traditional telling of Christ's birth, one which is sweet and familiar, this I liked. Then Santa is introduced as someone who visits the child in the manger and promises gifts to be brought in Jesus' name for all children, this I liked too but with reservations.

Coming from a traditional telling of Christ's birth, I would never put Santa at the manager. His story is at best an advertisement even though there was a real Saint Nicolas. However, from a literary stand point, I loved this beautiful telling of how Santa fits in to everything.

As with other books I have read from this author, she manages to write in poetic form brilliantly. Her words are expressive and naturally formed. She weaves the two stories well.

I would not consider this book a picture book, although, I suppose it is meant to be in some regard. In fact, I think an older child would be able to read this quite well as there are more words than pictures.

Overall, I do give this book 4 stars but caution my readers that may not want to merge Santa with the story of the nativity.

#Review: Manner-Man by Sherrill S. Cannon/ Illustrations by Kalpart

Summary:
"I am strong, and my flash is bright, And I will defend you and make things all right." These are the magic words to call upon Manner-Man - a superhero who can help control bullies and teach children ways to be considerate of others. Manner-Man arrives, shouting "To the Rescue", helping children learn about sharing and warning about not 'hitting with words.' He teaches that if someone starts pushing, just shout out "not nice!" Meet the children who form the Manner-Man team and find out how to join! Manner-Man incorporates messages and characters found within some of Cannon's earlier books - helping children learn how to cope with bullies and look within themselves for their inner superhero!

My review:
Every kid I have ever known needs some kind of hero to look up to. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and Wonder Woman are certainly all heroes that kids still may look up to but, they are getting pretty old. *wink*
They do not deal with the kinds of things kids today deal with, like bullying! So, what is a kid to do?

Enter Manner-Man: A new kind of hero for today's kids!
Author Sherrill Cannon created Manner-Man after a request for a superhero from one of her grandchildren.

This superhero helps children to learn kindness and manners. He shows children how by asking to share toys, not fighting, and definitely no bullying. When Manner-Man is called upon, all such things stop immediately but gives children the tools to be brave too.
--------
Sherrill Cannon created a complete book in poetic form just as she has other books. This is enough to make the book a winner, which by the way it is, but add in the illustrations by Kalpart and you have an amazing book.  I love her poetry for kids!

She takes on the subject matter full force but also brings in characters from her other books that had some issues. They all learn that having good manners and getting along is where it is at. A few of her previous books appear in this book as well. Look for them!

If that is not enough coolness, she even allows kids to join in with Manner-Man  and the crew by having a not-so-secret link to grab a Manner-Man Badge Sticker. Kids can get there own badge out of the back of the book too (that is, if you want to cut it out).

So, do you want to join the greatest and latest superhero, Manner-Man's crew? Well, then buy the book and find out how.

5 stars!

Review: My Fingerpaint Masterpiece by Sherrill S. Cannon Illustrated by Kalpart

Summary:
Have you ever seen a "work of art" worth millions, which looks like something your child just brought home from school? The dual perspective of "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder" and just a little bit of "The Emperor's New Clothes" is evident in this clever artwork story of a child who paints a fingerpaint print in class and then loses it in the wind on the way home. Illustrated from the point of view of a child, whose identity is left to the imagination of the reader since all of the illustrations are what the child sees, the fingerpaint print is interpreted by official "judges" as well as by bystanders. Should people be influenced by what others see, or use their own self-esteem to make their own judgments?

My review:
I decided to do this review via video. Check it out.  Just a little hint...5 stars!
