#Review: Are You A Pineapple by Kathyryn A. Zolman #childrensbooks #NationalPictureBookMonth #giveaway

Category:  Children's Fiction (Ages 3-7)38 pages
Genre:  Children's Picture Book
Publisher:  Mascot Books
Release date:   May, 2022
Content Rating:  G. Suitable for everyone.

About the book:

Kevin has a beautiful new puppy! But what should he name her? Kevin knows the puppy is special, but he’s about to find out just how smart she is when she helps Kevin choose her own name!

My review:

When it comes to pets, they have personalities just as their human counterparts do. This is a picture book, fictionalized, about a real dog. The dog has just become best friends with his new owner who does not know what to name him.

It was fun to see all of the names that is picked and the reasons for the names but this dog has other ideas.

The book reminds us (me) that we all have an identity that makes us, us. In this case, the dog's identity could not be found until the right name came into being. Wow!

I loved the larger than life colorful pictures done by Walter Policelli. His illustrations made an already cute story even cuter.

This book gets a 5 high paws from me.

Where to find the author:

Kathryn A. Zolman never expected to write a children’s book, but when Pineapple came into her life and she heard the story of how this sweet, smart dog got her name, she thought it would make a fun book for parents to read to their children. Pineapple is a Bull Mastiff, German Shepherd, Chow mix, and much like a real pineapple, she knows how to stand tall and is very sweet on the inside!

Kathryn is an avid dog lover. Along with her husband and daughter, they have raised three Doberman Pinschers, each with their own unique personality and character. Kathryn is an advocate for not only raising children to respect all animals, but also to be thankful for the pure joy that they bring to our lives. In writing this book, Kathryn seeks to spread a positive message and hopes it will help children express more gratitude in their lives.

A Leap In The Darkness by Ray Petrolino #middlegrade #excerpt #giveaway #fantasy

Date Published: 10-28-2022

Publisher: Beasts at the Feast Press

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Magic stirs and a little dog speaks: the kingdom will fall. But will humans listen?

Jake is a fluffy little dog who just happens to be one of the Sculptor's "wise ones" . . . but nobody's told him. He's certain he's ordinary, and he knows he doesn't deserve living in a rags to riches fairy tale where he’s been rescued from his hardscrabble life by the King of Gorseland and pampered and loved by his two royal children, Janice and James.

But the good life is threatened with the arrival of the sorcerer, Beezeldorn, and his raven. Beezeldorn is a seeming charlatan: a crowd-pleaser with his sleight-of-hand and cheap spectacle. But his power from dark magic runs deep, on display in town when he heals a leper.

The queen senses the danger and pays for her instincts with her life.

Jake knows something is wrong, but what can he do? Beezeldorn is always one step ahead, moving into the castle, earning the king’s confidence, and befriending James. Even Janice is drawn to him.

Now it's up to Jake to protect his family . . . before it's too late . . . for the king . . . and his kingdom.

EXCERPT:

A silent, shrouded figure, her head wrapped in tattered strips of linen, stood before him.

Jake could hear Nigel whimpering and Maisie hissing. Jake shivered, but kept his head

lifted up, keeping a resolute gaze on the stranger’s thin eye slits.

“You’re lost,” the figure said, gesturing to the tunnel near the little dog. “Choose that

path and you choose the side of the weak.”

The figure peeled back the wrappings from its head. “Look at what he has done for me.”

Jake’s mouth dropped; he was staring up at the woman from town . . . the leper who had

been healed and transformed by Beezeldorn into this creature of absolute beauty shimmering

before him.

“Let me show you the source of that power,” she said.

The other animals gasped in awe as they inched closer to her.

The woman cast a radiant smile down at Jake and then turned and walked away, toward

an upward curving tunnel on the opposite wall. Nigel and Winston eagerly followed after her,

their backsides shaking and wagging joyfully like little pups. Vincent hesitated and then tracked

after them. Maisie remained seated and looked back and forth from Jake to the small parade

moving away from them.

Jake growled and sprang forward, barking. “She lies!”

Review: Don't Fart In the Pool by Ben Jackson & Sam Lawrence #picturebook #NationalPictureBookMonth

About the book:
A small mistake could potentially haunt your for years to come, and one little 'slip' could be what haunts Stan for the rest of his life.

My review:
It seems that I should have reviewed this on taco Tuesday because that is where all the trouble began in this book. I mean, who doesn't like taco Tuesday? That is unless it is Wednesday and you have now done what Stan, the main character, has done! The title of the book gives a huge hint.

Being a former teacher, farts in the classroom or inevitable and kids tend to giggle (and sometimes teachers too). Usually, it "passes" and life goes on but as I read about Stan, I felt sorry for this kid. I mean there is no giggle here. We all get embarrassed of course, but poor Stan...well, he has to live with it forever!

Such a cute book to illustrate something that happens and the embarrassment that can follow.

The illustrations were minimum for what is meant to be a picture book and not a wow factor at all. However, for young readers the sentences are complex and of course, quite funny. The story itself gets a high five.

Who AM I— at our core we can celebrate our uniqueness while also appreciating that as humans we share qualities, virtues, properties of all the elements, of all animate and inanimate objects AND with other humans—WE ARE ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE—like snowflakes no two are alike AND yet like snowflakes, we are just water in another form and identical to all water droplets.

Sofia and the Shot by Sarah Wilson #vaccines #picturebooks #NationalPictureBookMonth

About the book:

The night before her doctor's appointment, five year old Sofia worries about the shot she knows she'll have to get. As she drifts off to sleep, Sofia finds herself on an adventure with her trusted guide Mr. Whiskers, who is eager to teach her the history and purpose of vaccines. The pair sail across the ocean learning important lessons about vaccines at each stop they make. By the end of their adventure, Sofia realizes the importance of getting vaccines, and the next day she goes to the doctor's office prepared to get her shot!

My review:

This book is a cute way to explain to a child why they should get their vaccinations or as the book calls it, "the shot." Written by a nurse, who I am sure has seen a number of kids scared, it gives a little more punch. The main character Sofia ends up visiting several uanimal characters who give reasons why she should get shots. I can see how kids could relate to the animals and it was a good way to present the ideas.

The only thing I got confused about was the beginning when Sofia found herself on a boat. It was not mentioned at the beginning that Sofia was dreaming and that she had not gone to the doctor's office yet.  That was not really mentioned until the end of the book.  I think if maybe she had been talking to her Mom about her fears, then it would have made sense. In any case, kids would still get the point as I did too.

Overall, I still liked the book and the illustrations were pretty nice too. 3 stars.

There are many unknowns in life, especially when your child is about to be born. There are even more when you know your child is about to be born with congenital heart disease and defects. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect. In fact, 1 in 100 infants is born with CHD, which is more than 1.3 million per year worldwide. Even after intervention through surgery, there is no cure for CHD. It is a life-long battle. Heart warriors are always at war, going through many battles from the moment they are born. And there are many unknowns.

Although CHD can be scary, let's never forget that our heart warriors are:

*Strong

*Brave

*Courageous

*Resilient

The strength and resilience that heart warriors show is truly amazing and inspiring. They beat the odds every time! They instill a lot of hope in other heart warriors and their families and most everyone else. They teach us to be strong and brave in everything we do. Are you brave enough? Prepare to be inspired!

Jennifer Diaz is an entrepreneur, business owner, mother to a brave and beautiful heart warrior angel in heaven (Arnaldo Lopez, Jr.), congenital heart disease awareness advocate, and now a published author. She is the owner of a safety school, a trucking company, and a real estate company and is currently working on a nonprofit organization for heart warriors and their families. She is from Rio Grande City, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Science in biology. Her strong love and deep affection for her son inspired her to write this book to him while she was alongside him in the hospital. Her son fought for his life, but God had different plans for him. Jennifer wants to keep the promise she made to Arnaldo-to keep his name, story, and legacy alive. She hopes to inspire and instill hope through her son's journey and story. She wants to touch many lives the same way her son touched hers and the lives of many others.
