The Buzz About the Books

Book 1: "Power Play: Hero’s Sword (Vol. 1) features a relatable main character, fast-paced action, devious enemies, and an exciting plot that will absolutely capture the intended audience’s imagination. I think (and my daughter fully agrees!) that M.E. Sutton has hit on a winning series. I highly recommend Power Play: Hero’s Sword to all tweens, but to reluctant readers in particular, due to the ease of language, the video game setting, and the fast pace and physical length of the book at 64 pages." ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews
Book 1: "This is a fantastic read to inspire kids against giving up as well as keep their imaginations going because I totally see my son imagining this happening to him as he runs through the house with his sword (could be anything from wrapping paper roll to a stick) noises like he is in a sword fight. I can't wait to finish reading it with him & continuing the series." ~ Cassandra Lost in Books
Book 1: "This is a quick and fun read. The language is simple, so it is perfect for the intended audience of a middle grade child. It is full of action and I think kids will love the concept of falling into their favorite video game and living out the fantasy. "~ Bookworm Lisa
Book 2: "This second installment is even better than the first. The storyline has more depth, and more imagery to go along with this tale of adventure, drama, and even a little bit of fairy tale romance. I became more fascinated by the main cast of characters, cementing my interest in this awesome series. The writing style is spot-on for a middle grade adventure, and there is enough action, suspense, and mystery to keep the reader flipping the pages to find out what happens next. I highly recommend this series to fans of middle grade fantasy and video games. I definitely look forward to reading more by this author. " ~ Toni @ My Book Addiction
Book 2: "This is such a fun series! My ten year old and I thoroughly enjoyed reading these together. I think it’s really special when you can find something worthwhile to read together. " ~ Brooke Blogs
Book 2: "I think many middle grade kids will enjoy reading about a kid their age falling into their favorite video game and living out the fantasy. It is perfect for kids who enjoy using their imaginations to escape the real world at times (and better to read about video games than to spend all day playing them!)" ~ Susan @ Mom Loves 2 Read

The Buzz About the Books

Book 1: "I really feel that this little book is a gem. It is a relatively short book (70-ish pages) that can easily be read aloud to children in one sitting. My kids and I were completely captivated by this fun, adventure-filled tale about a very charming and unorthodox princess. I highly recommend this book to families with children under the age of 10 and as young as 5 who love a good tale filled with fairy-tale characters such as dragons, witches, princesses, and knights." ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews
Book 1: "I liked this book because it has a great story line and a great message about believing in yourself. Petra proves that she and all girls can be daring, adventurous and brave. I think Petra was a great character and I liked Snarls (the dragon) even better because he had good sense and dragons are just cool. The book is a beginning chapter book so there isn't a lot of details in it but it tells a complete story. The black and white illustrations in the book are really great too. The book is part of "The Pen Pieyu Adventures." I hope that means there will be more books about Petra coming out! This book is an awesome beginning chapter book and a great read aloud." ~ Erik @ This Kid Reviews Books
Book 1: "Sir Princess Petra is one of those stories that will appeal to most everyone. It is charmingly funny. Petra sets out to prove she has what it takes to be a royal knight and proves she can do nearly anything. Snarls, the howling dragon, is endearing and lovable. If stuffed, sitting on a toy store shelf, every kid would want him. The story is short enough to be read in one sitting, say at bedtime. There are many opportunities for humorous, wacky, high-pitched voices, making Sir Princess Petra fun to read aloud. The author's imagination is appropriately childlike. Petra is a child every parent will love. I know a child would have sweet, funny dreams after hearing mom or dad read this at bedtime."~ Sue M. @ Kid Lit Reviews
Book 2: "Sir Princess Petra's Talent is precisely everything an early middle grade book should be with a multi-dimensional main character who is a great role model for young girls; a great supporting cast of unique and quirky characters; a plot largely driven through clever dialogue amongst the characters and involving much adventure and folly; and unexpected turns and twists that willleave parents and their children laughing out loud. " ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews
Book 2: "This is an adventurous story, which gets going from the very first page and doesn't stop. The characters are all enjoyable, and the situations, although sometimes challenging for Princess Petra, are very appropriate for the age group." ~ Tonja @ Bookworm for Kids
Book 2: "The[se books] are early chapter books, fun and suitable for children ages six and up. They move very quickly and are quite short, so I think they’d be particularly suitable for reluctant readers. I also think boys would enjoy these books as Sir Princess Petra thinks and behaves in the way I imagine most boys wish girls would think and behave – kind, down-to-earth, adventurous, and never squeamish or manipulative." ~ Tina @ Mommynificent

High Summer Read-a-thon Wrap Up & a Check Off Of My List

High Summer Read-a-Thon
Well, the weeks read-a-thon  ended yesterday. I wish I could say I managed to get my TBR pile down to a minimum but alas, I did not. What I did do was get a couple of books down and reviewed. I read  approximately two others but have not reviewed them yet.

The biggest thing I did was accomplish my goal of reading 52 books before the end of the year. Should I have set my goal higher? Anyway, I did it and can cross that off of my list of goals for this year.
However, does that mean I am done? Heck, no!

I am looking forward to seeing how many books I actually finish with by years end. The 'High Summer Read-a-thon' helped me to reach that goal and this coming winter for the 'Winters Respite' will only help to surpass it. I may join the 'Fall Fright Read-a-thon" too.

Thanks to the sponsors who are giving out books and other prizes but most of all, thank you to our organizer, Michelle, who organizes these events.

Now, off to read some more!

#Review: Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy! by Teddy O' Malley and Angie Dickens

Summary:
Destiny and Faith are going into second grade and their mom has a great idea. She's going to send them to a school for twins! They're not sure whether to be excited or terrified. Come join them and see what happens!

My review:
I am a sister to a set of twins. I know how twins can be with their dressing alike, weird twin sameness and also their differences.  I thought this might be a cute book to read.

In a nut shell, Destiny and Faith are a set of twins that go to a school with other twins. They decide to trade twins and chaos ensues and then, it is all okay again. This is pretty much the whole story.

I can't say that I was overly impressed because I wasn't. This was such a short little story that I am sure is the beginning of what will be a cute little series. To me, this was more of a set up book about the girls and their personalities, along with other twins they will encounter.

I am not exactly sure what I was looking for but I did think there would be much more plot but there simply, wasn't. This is not considered a picture book but what picture there were, I did not think added to the story.

This little book is for the emergent reader ages 6-9 which is about right. For that reason alone, as it will be easy for a new reader to read, I give this book 3 stars.

#Review: Love Hurts by Carol E. Wyer

Summary:
Love does not always result in ‘happy ever after’. It is a powerful emotion that, in the hands of a damaged soul, can be all-consuming, dangerous and even lethal.

In this collection of short stories—some dark, some light-hearted—written by award-winning Carol E. Wyer, we discover what happens when love takes over.

Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions.

My review:
This book from author Carol E. Wyer was a nice departure from the kind of writing I had read from her before. She has a somewhat twisted sense of humor and certainly a way with words. I had to look up a couple of those words for meaning.

Love Hurts  is a collection of  five stories independent of each other but with one common theme, love in its many aspects. All of the stories had interesting twisted endings which made for an overall fun book to read.

I was quite impressed with the stories and was able to get into the characters. A couple of the stories were easily recognizable in the direction they were going but it was not a deterant.

I would love to see more short stories like this from the author.

5 stars!

#Review: Blinded Thoughts by Mark Leslie

Summary:
The lives of two young black men from the Harlem "hood" of upper Manhattan in New York become inextricably intertwined through a series of seemingly unrelated events.
Follow Noel -- the Dollar Man -- through his early life on the street, a brief respite in a group home following his parents' arrest for abusing his sister, Jenna, culminating in several years of incarceration at the Bridges Juvenile Detention Facility in the Bronx after making a bold, but short-lived escape from the group home together with one of his roommates.

At the same time, become intimately involved in the parallel life of Terrell -- the Hustler -- who spends most of his life in the home of his grandmother, "Mama B," following his own mother's departure after she murders her friend, and who chooses to drop out of high school in order to embark on a life of drug sales, fast money, sex, and violence.

Until he encounters Noel.

My review:
I was completely blown away by this book. I read this book in one day.
Living in the city, I know things like what has been described in Mark Leslie's book can and do happen. I am grateful that I have never encountered such things. REALLY grateful!

Mark Leslie writes this book as fictional but it is based on real life events, events I imagine he has encountered himself. The book is gritty and certainly not for the faint of heart. There is sex, murder, hard core language, and drug abuse galore. I was shocked at the "gift" the character, Terell, was given from his mother. The way these two mens lives crossed was tragic and heartbreaking.
Oh, and the ending...totally unexpected! Unreal!

There are only two things that I saw as negative for the book, the book needed to be editied again as there were typos throughout. The other thing was the quotes before each chapter that alluded to content for each chapter was annoying and I think it could be dropped.

I highly recommend this book if you want to get into the minds of drug addicts, and people who are learning to survive in such a life.

The Buzz About the Book

Mother and Son Review by MDBR: "Flight of the Mite is a delightful, rhyming picture book featuring an adorable little mite who dreams big as the main character; a magical story underscoring the importance of imagination in children's development; and absolutely gorgeous and whimsical illustrations. I highly recommend this book to children ages 3 to 8 and I think it would be a great choice for reading aloud to children in a classroom or library setting."
"This is our new favourite story to read and will be a book that we will be keeping to pass down to future member of our family." ~ Raincity Parent
"This wonderful piece of children’s literature is well crafted and appropriate for children and adults, the message is clear, embrace diversity, ones weakness may actually be strength. The most interesting and entertaining part is that there is a consistent rhythm and rhyme to the story, keeping the powerful message light and playful." ~ Active Lee Dadding
" I have read the sweetest story!...The combination of these two talents [i.e., the author and illustrator] working together has left us with a sweet rhyming story about a little mites big imagination." ~ Moments in Mommyland
"I recently received a new children’s book to review called Flight of the Mite. So of course I went to the best critic in the house – my 4 year old son[...]. We sat down to read the story together and discovered a delightful tale about imagination and discovery... The illustrations are delightful and [my son] insisted that we stop to discuss some of them along the way. There was more than one “wow!” over a picture of the mite climbing a dandelion." ~ Prenatal to Parenting

The Buzz About the Book

"What if...? is a bittersweet and sometimes comical tale of a tween girl, P, who must come to terms with the loss of her mother as she navigates the world of dating, puberty, school, and friendships. P will absolutely warm your heart and the ending is guaranteed to leave you teary-eyed. While I sometimes felt that the themes were more appropriate for teens, I also came to realize that tween girls will also really enjoy reading about the world that they are just on the cusp of entering. *shudder* Ages 10+." ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews
"What a treat to fall in love with a character from the first second you begin to read her story. P has wit, charm, pluck, charisma--and a lot of things to learn. I totally loved her voice, world, friends and the many ways in which she drove her father Georgy insane. Full of laughs and love this charming book is a wonderful read--no matter what your age." ~ 5 Star Review, Blue, Amazon
"This is a charming and delightful read from start to finish, filled with characters you really care about, especially the unique girl "P" at the center. You don't have to be in this age group or life situation to relate to the sweet and heartfelt story about wanting the best for those you love. It's timeless and inspiring and may bring a tear to your eye!" ~ 5 Star Review, Susan A., Amazon
"Witty, intelligent and edgy coming-of-age book for girls (and parents!). This little book is a real gem. I bought it for my nieces too in hopes that they will appreciate their moms more! (and give their dads a chance to be a true hero, like the dad in this book!) I would bet that school libraries, teachers, parents and girls will rate this book a favorite for years to come." ~ 5 Star Review, Louann B., Amazon
"I was absolutely enchanted from the first page. This book made me cry! It was delightful. The story so sweet and the characters endearing and so real. By the time I got to the end, I just wanted to burst out in applause. This book is a joy to read at any age but perfect for the "tween" reader." ~ 5 Star Review, Jen W., Amazon
"Both my 11-year old daughter and I loved this wonderfully written book. Charming and exciting from beginning to end, this book is a real treasure." ~ 5 Star Review, Susan L., Amazon

Books and Bloggers Swap Follow Up and Reveal #bookswaps

A few weeks ago I had participated in the Chaotic Goddesses' Book and Bloggers Swap. The rules were really simple as you can see above. We were given a partner which mine was Meredith R.

We emailed back and forth for a bit but found out we really had some things in common. She was really gracious when I ended up in the hospital and waited a few days for hers.

So, this post is a follow up and reaveal post. Here is what she sent me...

This is the order for each. (Just an FYI, if you click on the book, it will take you to Amazon where you can purchase each.

1. A Book Meredith loves:
The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander

2. A book Meredith  hasn’t read but is interested in:
The Moon Sisters by Therese Walsh

3. Book off of my Wish List:
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Additional book: Rules by Cynthia Lord
This was a book that Meredith had in her own collection and had read many times over. She decided to gift it to me because she thought I would like it. It even has her name in it. I thought that was really sweet and I do like it!

Overall, I cannot wait for next time.

#Review: Fatal Impression by Reba White Williams

Summary:
Coleman and Dinah Greene are making names for themselves in the art world. Coleman's magazine publishing empire is growing and Dinah's print gallery is gaining traction. In fact, Dinah has just won the contract to select, buy, and hang art in the New York office of the management consultants Davidson, Douglas, Danbury & Weeks – a major coup that will generate The Greene Gallery's first big profits. However, when Dinah goes to DDD&W to begin work, she discovers a corporate culture unlike anything she's ever encountered before. There are suggestions of improprieties everywhere, including missing art worth a fortune. And when two DDD&W staff members are discovered murdered, Dinah and Coleman find themselves swept into the heart of another mystery. Revealing the murderer will be no easy task...but first Dinah needs to clear her own name from the suspect list.

My review:
I love a good mystery so, it was with excitement to read the book Fatal Impressions.
It was interesting to me to see the author tie in a bit of art history with a mysterious storyline of murder. I felt myself feeling sorry for the main character, Dinah, as she was accused of murder which she so clearly did not do. I have met people in real life like this character and know that they would not hurt a fly.

The author showed how a business, good or bad, can be cutthroat (excuse the pun). Sometimes you have to do things you do not want to do, although murder is not one of them. In any case, Ms. Williams did a good job of weaving real life situations in to a really great book.

The author also managed to show how some people you think are for you are actually against you or vice versa. I never knew who the murderer truly was until the very end. Like any good writer Ms. Williams had me thinking it was one person and turned out to be another.

I did have a couple of issues with this book. The first of which was the on-going issues among the characters seemed to drag and bog down the murder investigation itself. I kind of got lost in the number of characters that kept popping up everywhere. I simply has a tough time keeping up with all of them.
I realize this was author's prerogative but it made for a longer story than maybe needed. Which brings me to my next point...

Sixty-seven chapters! Yikes that was a ton to read.

My final issue was it seemed too long to wrap up the book. Once the murderer had been revealed there were 4-5 more chapters of round up. I felt this could have all been put in maybe a whole chapter as an epilogue and thus the book would not have drug on.

All and all, even with the issues, I felt this was a terrific book and will get 4 stars from me.
