Is there more to the Vietnam-era story of a student’s death? Cassandra’s
search for the long-buried truth stirs up the wrath of those who want to keep the past forgotten.

My review:
This book is a nice departure of the cozy mysteries I have read before. Although still a female "detective", the main character's setting is on a college campus and she is not a store owner. No, she is a college vice president and has a load to figure out.

I was intrigued by this book to begin with as the characters in the book, with the exception of the VP, are Deaf. It is also written into the book that they use ASL to communicate their issues on campus. This is mainly the premise of the book to advocate for those on the campus who would not be able to hear in emergency devices being used on campus. The teacher backing this project is also Deaf, the VP is the student's advocate, and all of them find themselves in a 40 year old mystery which ties together so nicely.

It is very unusual to find good stories, if any, about Deaf culture. I could identify with many of the issues surrounding this group as I too am deaf. Because of that, I could not put the book down but even more so, the author wrote a good mystery! The twists were just enough that I wanted to keep going and certainly glad I did. Just as I thought the "killer" was caught, BAM, a twist to make me think otherwise.

Great piece! 4 stars from me.

Disclosure: I received a Kindle copy of this book. The views and opinions expressed here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~Michelle

Excerpt:
Adolf Hitler was a German politician who was the leader of the Nazi Party, Chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945, and “leader” of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. As dictator of the German Reich, he initiated World War II in Europe with the invasion of Poland in September 1939 and was a central figure of the Holocaust.
Under Hitler’s leadership and racially motivated ideology, Nazi regime was responsible for the genocide of at least 5.5 million Jews and millions of other victims whom he and his followers “sub-humans” and socially undesirable. Hitler and the Nazi regime were also responsible for the killing of an estimated 19.3 million civilians and prisoners of war. In addition, 29 million soldiers and civilians died as a result of military action in the European Theatre of World War II. The number of civilians killed during the Second World War was unprecedented in warfare, and constitutes the deadliest conflict in human history.
Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s until his death in 1953. Holding the post of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, he was effectively the dictator of the state.
Under Stalin’s rule the concept of “Socialism in One Country” became a central tenet of Soviet society, contrary to Leon Trotsky’s view that socialism must be spread through continuous international revolutions. He replaced the New Economic Policy introduced by Lenin in the early 1920s with a highly centralised command economy, launching a period of industrialization and collectivization that resulted in the rapid transformation of the USSR from an agrarian society into an industrial power.[4] The economic changes coincided with the imprisonment of millions of people in Gulag labour camps.
The initial upheaval in agriculture disrupted food production and contributed to the catastrophic Soviet famine of 1932–33, known in Ukraine as the Holodomor. Between 1934 and 1939 he organized and led the “Great Purge”, a massive campaign of repression of the party, government, armed forces and intelligentsia, in which millions of so-called “enemies of the working class” were imprisoned, exiled or executed, often without due process. Major figures in the Communist Party and government, and many Red Army high commanders, were killed after being convicted of treason in show trials. The exact number of deaths caused by Stalin’s regime is still a subject of debate, but it is widely agreed to be in the order of millions.

#Review: Twisted Love by Wally Runnels

Synopsis:
Roiling in political corruption and the raging violence of drug cartels in the California/Mexico borderlands, Twisted Love explores the redemptive power of love even amidst the most brutal and privileged echelons of contemporary society. Julietta Aguilar, a young archaeologist with a dark past shrouded with sordid family secrets, discovers a hidden chamber under the ruins of the Templo Major, in the heart of Mexico City. She soon finds herself enmeshed in an ancient mystery even as she tries to solve her father's senseless murder.

Now followed by cartel killers, deadly supernatural spirits and thwarted by her own family, her quest for peace seems almost insurmountable – until she meets a man in black with a nefarious background who goes only by one name. Rocky.

My review:
This book is incredibly gritty. It delves into a story of love, lust, hard work, pain, and life in the underworld of drugs and killing. The title of the book somewhat makes you believe that love will prevail with a bit of a twist. It is that for sure but it does not really give hint at how twisted it is. The characters are well developed and believable. Some characters I felt pain for, others, I loathed.

There are scenes in the book that are hard to swallow and at times I wanted to throw up at the thought of them. Yet, they were written with true imaginative power and not so graphically. The author was brilliant how he wrote those scenes and the love scene that was in the book as well. I enjoyed the twists of them.

Do not get me wrong though, this is no romance novel! The author does a great job at picturing what it might be like to live as an archaeologist and what dangers it could impose. He manages to twist ancient theories of the Aztec people with a ghostly dig. He gets political corruption in there too. If that is not enough, there is also an intertwined story of an ex-marine turned hired blood-cold killer, turned conscientious lover into the story. I was truly amazed how it all came together in the end.

This book is one roller coaster of a ride that was really hard to put down at times. However, I had to because there is so much, that I had to breathe on occasion just to grasp it all.

Do you want a great thriller to read? Then this is the book for you. 5 stars!

NOTE: I do want to warn my readers of some possible triggers: Graphic murder scenes, uncomfortable sex scenes, and language.

#Spotlight : Deconstructing Anxiety by Dr. Todd E. Pressman #selfhelp

Book Details:
Book Title: DECONSTRUCTING ANXIETY The Journey from Fear to Fulfillment by Todd E. Pressman, PhD
Category:  Adult Non-Fiction (18+) (336 pages)
Genre:  Self-Help/How To
Publisher:  Rowman & Littlefield
Release date:  January 2020
Tour dates: Jan 13 to Feb 7, 2020
Content Rating: PG

Book Description:
In Deconstructing Anxiety, Pressman provides a new and comprehensive understanding of fear's subtlest mechanisms. In this model, anxiety is understood as the wellspring at the source of all problems. Tapping into this source therefore holds the clues not only for how to escape fear, but how to release the very causes of suffering, paving the way to a profound sense of peace and satisfaction in life.
With strategically developed exercises, this book offers a unique, integrative approach to healing and growth, based on an understanding of how the psyche organizes itself around anxiety. It provides insights into the architecture of anxiety, introducing the dynamics of the “core fear” (one's fundamental interpretation of danger in the world) and “chief defense” (the primary strategy for protecting oneself from threat). The anxious personality is then built upon this foundation, creating a “three dimensional, multi-sensory hologram” within which one can feel trapped and helpless.
Replete with processes that bring the theoretical background into technicolor, Deconstructing Anxiety provides a clear roadmap to resolving this human dilemma, paving the way to an ultimate and transcendent freedom. Therapists and laypeople alike will find this book essential in helping design a life of meaning, purpose and enduring fulfillment.
