Review of "No Laughing Allowed" Part 2

The long awaited review:

As I previously mentioned in part 1 of this review, I received a free Kindle version of the book,
No Laughing Allowe (life Well Blogged) by authors Abbey Fatica and Monica Mylet.

I have to say that to not laugh through the reading of this book, you simply just had to be from another planet. What Abbey Fatica and Monica Mylet actually did was gather together some of the most hilarious mom bloggers out there and stuffed them chapter by chapter in a book.

The contents within the pages contained thoughts from no less than 34 bloggers. These ladies discussed their lives of mommy-hood, school drop-offs, womanly stuff, sex or lack there of and the gift of wine with such flair and hilarity. I cannot begin to tell you how I almost choked a couple of times on my large glass of Pepsi with the familiarity of it all.

As a Mom and now, young Grandma, I saw myself in some of these tales.

For example like the one where trying to get in a  quickie while the kids are watching TV. (Just for the record, to my kids: don't roll your eyes at me. You will do it too one day now that you have your own kids.)

I could truly relate to the blogger who felt somewhat defeated because she could not fit in to her little black dress anymore. She tells of getting stuck. Oh my gosh, tears of laughter or is it sadness.

Then of course the blogger who listed the things she had planned to do as the "best mommy in the world". You know, like having dinner at the table, EVERY night. Yeah, that happens. (uh hmm...the kids rolling their eyes at me again)

If you are a Mom, Grand-Mom, wish you were a Mom, or even a Husband (yes, you are included in here too), then you want to read this book! It is in your face truthful and so much fun.

Raise your glass of wine because this book gets:

Review of "No Laughing Allowed" Part 1

Before I get into this this review, I have to confess an admission of an omission.
These ladies that wrote this book I am about to tell you about sent me a Kindle version a few months ago of their book.

I read their book as soon as I received it. I like to do this because that way I am ready to write about them right away as the books come up in my scheduled ques. Here is where I messed up. I did not write the review! I did not schedule it...nothing! What happened here, I am not sure.

I do wish to apologize to you ladies as I have never done that before. As it turns out, I had to read it again because...well...it had been too long since I read it last. sigh...Forgive me will you?

You my dear readers are about to find out though why even after a second read, due to my error. it was worth it.

Now, go on to part 2 of this review.

Review of : "Tadeo Turtle" by Janis Cox

Did you ever have a turtle when you were growing up. I had several because we used to catch them off the side of the road and bring them home.

I discovered author and illustrator Janis Cox and her turtle story called Tadeo Turtle and had to read it.
This is a very short children's story that Janis Cox has written in rhyme. Add her colorful water painted illustrations and it adds up to a cute book.

Tadeo, pronounced TAHD-ay-OH, is a turtle with a colorful shell who is happy with himself until he meets other animals. He discovers things he likes about the other animals that he cannot do.

In a dream, he manages to shed his shell so that he can run free but discovers life without his shell is not all it is cracked up to be. He learns that he was given his shell for a reason and learns to be happy with himself once again.
-----------

What I really liked about this book was that it shows children that no matter what they look like that they are here are this Earth and have a purpose in life. The books helps kids to understand they are perfectly made and to be happy with who they are.

Janis Cox's watercolor paintings are bright and cheerful. She basis her book off of Christian principles and any homeschooling family or Christian family would certainly love this book.

A bonus to this book is Janis Cox includes a curriculum for the young readers which includes art, music, physical education, language study and scripture study.

Review of "The Night Horses" by Anaka Jones

I have always thought horses to be beautiful animals and love to take photos of them when I get a chance.
So, it was great fun when I received a copy of the children's book, The Night Horses by Anaka Jones.

The story starts out on a typical farm-like setting with the horses eating, running on the land, having new babies and getting showers. Some of the horses are even named.  This seems all so commonplace for a farm.

However, when the sun goes down and the people are done for the night, the horses night time activities are anything but typical! Let's just say...PARTY!

Truly if you want to know what happens at night pick up a copy and read this book. It will have you laughing.

Anaka Jones has an obvious love of horses as the illustrations in her book are bold, beautiful and sometimes, downright funny. As I said before, read the book and you will know what I mean.
---------------------

What makes this book even more fun is knowing that Anaka Jones is only 12 years old. That is right she is 12!

It goes to show me and hopefully you my readers, that no matter how old you are, if you truly love something then you can write about it and then read it too.

This book gets:

Anaka Jones, was born and raised in Ann Arbor Michigan.  She lives with her parents and has two older brothers, a frog, a lizard and two dogs.

Review of "If You Were Me and Lived in France"

Bonjour! That is hello in French.

In her newest series of If You Were Me and Lived In... Carole P. Roman now offers her second book called, If You Were Me and Lived In France. This new book sends children once again to another part of  the world to learn about other children and their culture.

As in the first book two children introduce the reader to places around France that one might see like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or maybe the Boulangerie. To find out what that is you must read the book.

Children learn a little of French with pronunciations in the back of the book and come to know that children in other parts of the world are sometimes just like them.

The illustrations are bold and colorful and only add to the great book this really is. This book is targeted for ages Pre-K through year 8.

I give this book:
Au revoir,

Review of "If You Were Me and Lived In Mexico" by Carole P. Roman

In her new premiere series of  the book If You Were Me and Lived In Mexico, Carole P. Roman once again put her background as a social studies teacher to work. Her goal here is to show children that even though the world is a great big place, we all do many of the same things.

This first book in her new series takes children on a journey to learn about Mexico. The book starts out with the same two children that are on the cover, showing where exactly Mexico is on the globe.

The book continues with the tour as children can stop by the capital city, where they might go to school, and other sites on the way. Children also learn what their own names might be, what they would call Mom and Dad in Spanish and even what money would be called.

All the words are simple and the illustrations cute and understandable. In the very back of the book are all the words used in Spanish with how to pronounce them. Awesome!

The book is targeted for Pre-K  through age 8.

Interview with Dr. Cliff Post character and star of author Linda Cadose's Books

Very recently I had the distinct privilege to sit down and interview Dr. Cliff Post, noted archaeologist and star in author Linda Cadose's books. What follows is that interview.

Hello Dr. Post and welcome. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do an interview with me and my blog, “Once Upon A Time.” We are here to discuss about you and the books that you star in, The Hidden Chamber In The Great Sphinx and The Underwater Pyramid In The Bermuda Triangle. by Linda Cadose.

Please tell me a little about yourself .

I was born and brought up in Plymouth, MA. My parents owned a lovely house on a corner lot that had a panoramic view of Plymouth Harbor. My father was an archaeologist who taught at Harvard University. During the year, my father commuted to Harvard but in the summers we accompanied my father on archaeological digs.
I went to Boston University for my Bachelor’s degree and I went to Harvard University for my Master’s degree and my Doctorate.
Five years ago, I married a lovely lady who is a Social Studies teacher from Brookline and I adopted her son, Matt.

How did you get started in the industry?

I started in the industry from childhood when I went on digs with my father.

Is Linda Cadose a personal friend?

Linda Cadose and I met through the Boston Archaeological Society. She was a journalist writing for "Dig Magazine". We became friends. Later, she asked permission to write about my adventures.

Being an archaeologist seems like it might be an interesting job but time consuming. Can you speak about that for any young readers that might want to do that some day? Who might you work with besides other archaeologist?

Being an archaeologist is fascinating but it can be challenging as well. When you work in Egypt, a dig means laboring for long hours in the hot desert sun. You work with art experts, historians, engineers and museums.

How is it that you got so interested in Egypt and pyramids?

My father was an Egyptologist so I spent most of my summers in Egypt. My father would talk about the pyramids at the dinner. I became interested in the pyramids before I was old enough to work on the digs.

Was it a fun time for you growing up? Did you travel much?

Growing up was great fun for me. When I was in school, both the teachers and the other students would ask my about my father’s work. We traveled to Egypt every summer.

In both books, you talk about ancient alien visitors. In fact, you have deep discussions with a marine biologist friend of yours about them in The Underwater Pyramid. You discussed a find in the Bermuda Triangle. Tell me more about that and how it relates to the aliens.

In the summer of 2000, oceanographer Paulina Zelitsky discovered a Sunken City on the Cuban Shelf off the coast of Cuba. It contained 3 pyramids, buildings and roads. The city is estimated to be 14,000 years old. The city was flooded by an ancient earthquake. It was flooded and sunk before the end of the Ice Age which was in 10,500 B.C.
It is believed by some researchers that this ancient city is Atlantis which was described by Plato as being in that location. Some researchers believe that the ancient Egyptians were descendents of the Atlanteans.

Linda’s  whole book is based on your obsession with  the pyramids and the aliens. I am quite sure you are at digs a lot. Did you come to a complete conclusion as to why we humans have not come to meet them again?

We do not know why the aliens have not come back to Earth.

I should point out that I personally believe in the ancient aliens theory but mainstream archaeologists do not believe in this theory. I believe in the ancient aliens theory for the following reasons.

1. The ancients could not have built their magnificent structures with the primitive tools mainstream archaeologists claimed they used. For example, in the statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel  the left side of Ramses face is the exact mirror image of the right side of Ramses face.

2. The structures on the Giza Plateau are much older than mainstream archaeologists believe they are. For example, in my opinion, the Great Sphinx is 50,000 years old.

Dr. Post, I read in the books that you have done speeches on the topic. Will you be doing more speeches or perhaps some radio interviews anytime soon?

I have no plans to do any radio interviews. However, I have been invited to speak at the Boston Archaeological Society and I have been invited to speak at Harvard University.

Awesome!

Have you contracted with Linda Cadose to be the subject of other books based on your knowledge of archaeology? If so, would you want to give my readers a little hint where you may be doing another dig?

Linda has my permission to chronicle all my digs. I’ll be going to the Holy Land to find the Tomb of Jesus.

Oh, fantastic! I look forward to reading that book too.

I noticed in Linda’s first book, The Hidden Chamber In The Great Sphinx  that you married a lady who had a son Matt. Matt seems very smart but had some physical problems. I sincerely hope he was not bullied, that seems such a problem today. Any thoughts about people who have different abilities?

Everyone in our society should be given every opportunity to succeed. Those who are physically or mentally challenged should have the same opportunities as everyone else.

A little sensitive subject here, Dr. Post but I must address it. I took note in Linda’s second book that you met someone else and was going to divorce your wife after you had gone through so much. You know I took exception to this fact. Can you explain to me why the subject was addressed in Linda’s book?  You were in some really hot water there and your children quite upset.

I told Linda to be frank about my life, no holes barred. I had a midlife crisis that hurt my family. I will be eternally grateful that my wife took me back.

Do you think by telling your story that children who like to read, Linda Cadose’s books, will relate? How so?

Linda and I have discussed children’s literature at length. We agree that children’s books should be educational as well as entertaining. I also agree that fun action/adventure novels can entice young people to read.

What advice would you give aspiring archaeologist?

A young person who aspires to be an archaeologist should read about the field and should speak to someone who is an archaeologist.

Good advice.

Ok some fun questions:
What was your favorite cartoon character growing up? Worst?

My favorite cartoon was Batman. I didn't like the Hulk.

Did you make mud pies or dig in the dirt when you were little?

I never made mud pies but I liked to play in the dirt as a child. I would pretend that I was on an archaeological dig.

Did you find buried  treasure as  a  kid?   Will you help me find my keys, I have lost them?

I never found any buried treasure, but if it was part of a dig that would be exciting.

That would be funny if my keys showed up in one of your digs.

If you could meet any famous person, who would it be and why?

I would have loved to have met Howard Carter, the man who found King Tut’s tomb.

Once again, thank you so much Dr. Post for allowing me to interview you.  I have found you to be an intriguing person and most fun.

Review of Catch The Wind by Tomas Trujillo

Catch the Wind by Tomas Trujillo is a feel good tale that takes place in the early days of the depression in the deep south.  I immediately was able to picture the scenery as Tomas Trujillo can so easily describe it.

The two young teens, the main characters of the story, River and William, find themselves fast friends on the banks of the river where they go fishing. There friendship and trust in each other is sealed when they discover that their individual families are in trouble.

A tale of a huge gator in the swamps with a huge bounty on its head, entices River and William to go off on their own down the Mississippi River on a homemade raft.  Along the way, the boys find themselves in treacherous circumstances that threaten to do them harm.

What happens to River and William is for you to find out by reading the book.
-------------

This book had a very Mark Twain kind of feel to it, overall a good book and is an easy read. I could easily see this book read by middle school children especially those that dream big dreams. I could also see educators requiring this book as an alternative book exploring  some of the history of depression era, although, I caution that it is not an educational book per se.

Review of " 7 Days With Adam" by Rev. Jay Speichts

Blurb:

7 Days With Adam is a brilliantly crafted work about Adam, the first man, who visits the author and shatters many of his core beliefs about God, creation, the basic nature of humans and this world. He has astonishing revelations about his and Eve's real legacy. After the 7 days visit, he leaves the author enlightened with actual exercises, prayers and meditative techniques that we can all us to access our Divine Inner Power and achieve mastery in our lives. This book is a testament to the value of storytelling in spirituality, and to disciplines spiritual practice, as well as being attuned to the Higher Self and Divine Inner Light that is in all of us.

My review:

At first when I began this book, I thought it was a work of fiction, a really good telling of what could happen in a spiritual journey. What I found out as I read, was that it was in truth a real enlightened experience of the author.

7 Days With Adam ran the gamut of fear to enjoyment to peace within. The authors interaction with Adam and at one point Eve, helped him to grow spiritually and as an overall better human being.

Adam provided growth opportunities to be shared through meditative practices and prayer with the hope that the world could be united with a Divine Consciousness. These practices would allow the author and the readers of his book to get in tune with the one called the One Source.

Overall, I found this book to be great and I could easily see myself practicing many of the disciplines that are engaged in this book. I even buy in to the thought processes. I would have tons of questions like the author did!

However, I think an average reader that would pick up this book has to be prepared to have their world turned upside down. An open mind would be a must! Many of the things Jay Speichts speaks about and Adam addresses, would not be welcomed in many circles of religiosity. Isn't that what spiritual growth is about though?

About the author:

Rev. Jay Speights is an award winning author, chaplain, spiritual coach, and Executive Director of the oldest Interfaith Seminary in the world.  He has two grown daughters and lives in the Washington, DC area with his wife.

Review of Brood X by Michael Phillip Cash

Being from the Midwest and especially from the country section, I know all about the noises of Spring and early Summer. It is not uncommon to hear birds, crickets and cicadas chirping their mating calls or for that matter to see them.

So, to read a book that puts the bugs, cicadas in the forefront of the story did not seem like it could be that big of deal. I could have not been any more wrong!

The thriller book, Brood X by Michael Phillip Cash starts out in a typical upscale suburbia with the characters of Seth and his wife, Laura. Seth has just bought a new camcorder and has found out Laura is pregnant with their first child. His intention is to use his camcorder to record Laura's pregnancy.

The story moves into anything but typical as they begin to hear stories of a great cicada invasion, dubbed Brood X, that is going to be hitting their area. The hype of it causes neighbors to begin preparing in mass as stores sell out of everything.  Seth ignores the warnings but appeases Laura with some things like a brand new freezer to stock food.

As the story unfolds, Laura's college friend, Marni and her husband, Dominic literally move in to Seth and Laura's lives. The inevitable drama ensues as they try to live together in some semblance of harmony. On one lazy afternoon of swimming pool side, the first of the invasion begins with a sting to Dominic's chest. From this first incident the plot thickens as more and more cicadas arrive.

Unprepared, Seth, Laura, Marni,  and Dominic find themselves in a dire situation where death and destruction seems to come commonplace. Sadness and fear are prominent in Seth and Laura's lives and replace the happiness they should be enjoying at this time during Laura's pregnancy.
Seth promises Laura that he will protect her and their unborn baby throughout and learns a bit about himself and the friends along the way. All the while everything about the brood invasion is documented on the camcorder.

What happens to Seth, Laura, their unborn baby, Marni and Dominic is left up to you my readers to find out for yourselves.

In many twists of writing, Michael Phillip Cash weaves a horrifying tale of what the real life brood of cicadas could be like when they wake up from a 17 year sleep. Although admittedly I am not a fan of the thriller genre, I found this book to be excellent and kept me wanting to read more.
